wrist pin retainer clip

I lost a motor (again) Friday a week ago. I took the bike down to Houston and Entropy and I took the remains apart. Amongst the rubble that was the motor, I found a spread out wrist pin retainer clip. The wrist pin was gone, and a piece of brass about the width of the rod was found on the back of the motor that had apparantly came out through the hole there.

At first, I thought the rod had broken, but there was no wrist pin and the holders of same on the underside of the piston had not been broken. When I got back to Dallas, my friend Ken, RICHCRAFT, took one look and showed me how one of the retainer clip had come off, the wrist pin moved over a ways toward the cylinder wall, and was sheared off by the pull of the rod. Of course, the rod ( Carillo) disintegrated after being freed and swinging around at about 11,000 RPM. I'm really glad to find out the origination of the problem was not the rod.

I don't know how to post pictures, so WIDEOUT will post some pictures of the mess soon.

I don't know if this as an anomally or what. Don't know how this problem could be prevented. The motor was running strong and smooth, and had been together for a good while-more than a year. I assume this is just one on the problems of racing.

My friend Entropy has volunteered to help me put a motor together, so I will be back out there before long. I've met a lot of good guys in my dragracing effort, but Entropy is a standout among friends.

My buddy Buddy is no quitter, that's for sure!

What a mess that bottom end is, WHOA!
#3 rod cut a swath thru the block & both cases, front and back, even cleanly cutting the oil pump drive shaft.

Add Osti's top end carnage to Buddy's bottom end destruction and you have it all

Hopefully the #6 int bucket well can be repaired; it got dinged pretty good where the bucket disintegrated. S&K should get the head today.

The #6 int cam lobe got dinged, Webb says they can fix it.

Crank looked REALLY good, all journals beautiful, no oiling problems whatever. Some dings in the drive and starter gears; Marine will get it today.

the trans didn't much like trying to mulch a few pounds of debris, but Buddy's buddy in Dallas can put it right.

We tore the motor down on Jul 8, let's just see how fast Buddy & I can get his baby back at the track.

Mike,
Thanx for the offer of parts!

Nox,

It would not shift on the only competetion run I made because I changed a pill in the shifter to a RPM level the rev limiter would not allow. I did this because I had the wrong gearing in for nitrous in the 1/4 mile and no time to change it. I had hoped the extra rpm's I had planned on would allow me to get through the 1/4. I violated one of the sacred rules of racing; if it is running ok-don't change anything.

On the competetion run, I had a .09 jump on my opponent at the 60 ft. point until the bike couldn't shift to 2nd. Ah, well, such is life. Actually, I was happy I was having a good day in driving the bike.

Who was sleeping in the truck? I was busy fighting biting insects.

Sorry to hear about your motor Buddy. I have heard that teflon buttons are more reliable than the clips, but I don't know anyone who runs them. Good luck with the rebuild.

Thanks for letting me watch you guys tear it down. I only wish I was there a bit longer, to take a pic of the culprit.

Sucky pics, too much coffee and I shook a bit. Thanks to Dale for hosting

Saturday night, you are right, I couldn't get any traction so spun badly right off the line and was still spinning when it was time to shift. I don't quite remember, but one time I didn't spin too much, so I might not have been keeping tension on the clutch before launching on the other two runs.

The spinning that night prevented me from makeing even one good run so I could have known what sprokets to use. I didn't get a chance to use nitrous except only on the run before the first elimination run.

I talked to Mark at RandD today, he said the 5 to 6 shift is real bad on the 12, and that 6th only engages about half in........, and is very hard to make, even with a cut tranny. I am going to have my extra drum modded as soon as i can, but they send a new thurst washer too, and it goes on the input shaft, so I have to split the cases, I may do this in a month or so, would like to do it before the next RRR event, but I doubt it....., I think I am just going to set it up as a 5 speed, I think 17/49 will work good, 680 lbs total.........., if not, I may need to put a 50 on it, but I think it will be good........

Hope you have it together soon.........

Since you need new cases get 02 or newer. (cases and oil view window)
EVERY 2000 around here has died with #3 rod some twice.
I see it was not big end problems but still #3.

I've now lost 2 motors, neither to oiling problems. The 1st was due to a rod breaking just below the wrist pin on #4 and this one due to a retainer clip comeing out on #3. Everything else with both motors seemed to be fine, and both were oiling very well-all cylinders. The motors were both 01s.

I am of the opinion that all motors will eventually come apart due to something. More quickly if they are used as race motors only, probably due to the extra h p they put out and contant stress of full power on every run.

In spite of that, racing is probably as addictive to some people (me) as drug use, and almost as expensive.

MM,

The clips on cylinder # 3 were put in by the original builder, and I assume were new.

Buddy, sorry to hear about the motor. You and entropy should have it purring in no
time. If you need any help just give me a ring or pm. Keep us up to date on the build.
I have stock 1st, 5th, and 6th gears if you find yours are not able to be fixed or within a
reasonable price.

Thanks, Gary. As we get into it, there will always be something we will be needing. Between Entropy and I, however, there are a lot of spare parts laying around.

Scott Crawford, of Cycle Werkz, in Ft. Worth, is doing a very good and reasonably priced rebuild on my Transmission. He's one of the really good, fair and honest builders in the area.

Yep, I know the feeling on them parts laying around. Are you going to San Antonio
to spectate? If so I'll see ya there. I'll probably hang out with Karl till he gets sick of
me and boots me out of his camp, then I'll pester George, Ractrack 14, and 9SecJen.

Wish I could help ya out more, but I am an idiot and only good at cleaning parts, torqueing bolts, taking things apart and an occasional plastigauge.

Another reason to go with the Muzzy 1270 or any other piston kit they offer.

The wristpin clips are VERY STOUT!!
