Adjustable Strut Advice
I want to do a mild lowering job on my new 2006 ZX-10. Most of the struts I've seen advertised are for a 2 or 3 inch drop. I would like to drop the bike front and rear about an inch. I use it for Sunday group rides on winding roads and informal street racing with my friends.
It seems to me that the adjustable lowering struts are what I need. If you have used this type of strut, what are your comments?
Can the stock sidestand be used or is that taking a chance?
Best wishes,
Dave

They are normally called "links" rather than struts. If you can't find the ones you want you have a couple of options. You can make your own links using rod end bearings from your local bearing supplier (you will need two left hand and two right hand threaded rod ends) and I use some 5/8" hex bar, threaded at each end. This gives over an inch of adjustment, but if I want more, I use a different length bar in the middle. The other option would be to buy the links you see advertised and modify them to get the drop you want, again by using a different length bar in the middle.
You can probably keep the stock sidestand if it's only an inch drop, just bear in mind that the bike will be more upright when parked. A small piece of wood under the front wheel can help.

One of the guys over on 12r.org sold some to a buddy of mine for about 95 I think it was. I put them on for him and they seemed pretty nice. I have some Kennedy links. They were a lil higher, but they have done the job for a few years now. They were stainless. I have heard of some of the cast ones breaking, but not the stainless ones for sure!!

Doug Ray out at spencer cycle has em, very nice, I had to make some longer centers for mine though, to go with my link pro, but he does have some made that go WAY low........., I just did not think to get em, give him a call

I bought some from schnitz, for my 14.
They are adjustable from stock height all way down to 3.5 inch drop, and anywhere between.
Sweet stuff.
For the street handling I run 1.25 lower both ends,
I lower the rear right down, and strap the front for drags.
Initially I ran 1.25 front, and 2.5 rear, but cornering habits suffered... frt tire push.
That was the limit for stock side stand... had to be very careful where I parked.
1.25 each end works good though with stock stand.
Nice stuff.
Whatever you do, don't buy the 3 hole junk, you''ll have to dissasmble and lift the bike to adjust to other height, as well will not be exactly the height you may want!
Good luck

Gentlemen,
Thanks to all for your advice. I have ordered adjustable links from Spencer Cycle today. They are steel and should be over engineered for my use: Sunday morning group rides and informal street racing with my riding buddies.
I will lower the front and rear an inch, and use the stock sidestand.
Best wishes,
Dave
