suspension setup with a 6 inch arm

Is it posible to use the stock shock still?I've cut the fender right off, turn signals and all and tightened the spring preload a few turns but i still hit.So i went up to the middle holes on the muzzy links and still hit a bit.I know i have to build a sheet metal undertail but was trying to get away from doing it right away.

Cowboy,
I went thru exactly what you are experiencing about 2-3 mo ago. There is a very good thread on Frank's site (Psychobusa) where all those pros gave me advice.. Bottom line is that at my weight (230# suited), I needed a new spring & valving, so I ended up getting a new Penske set up for my weight and the 6" arm.

Fox, Penske, Hyperpro all apparently make great shocks, but which should be set up specifically for the 12 with a 6" arm (length, valving, spring).

The spring on my Penske is much heavier as is the valving. Now I lower the adj bones and do NOT hit my undertail (sheet metal). Much more consistent 60's, works great, $800 thru Steve (excellent service) at Orient Express.

Where is your compression damping at now? Stiffening it up should help your clearance problem.

suspension

Thanks guys,I actually got Frank to build the arm(0-8inch over)and have it at about 6 inch now.The compression is set at 4 clicks from full stiff and the rebound is stock setting. How far should i go with spring preload?I'm going to build a sheet metal undertail and see if i can get away with the stock shock.Funds are too tight for a shock but its in the future.Does anyone make a undertail that gives you lots of clearance?

Entropy,Did I read somewhere that you are using a holeshot electric shifter.

CB,
yep I have the Holeshot with about 300 passes on it. Goddamn reliable, clik, clik clik! No air pump to fool with. Just don't expect it to shift cleanly when you are in the limiter; but hitting the limiter is to be avoided anyway, eh? If you get one there are some tips which will make the install easier, just ask.

When I was fighting my stock shock /ext arm combo, I screwed down the preload as tight as I could, full damping on compression and rebound. That helped my fat ass get launched. Also I dremeled out the entire undertail and replaced it with a sheet of aluminum. Before the adj and mod to undertail, the tire hit the undertail so hard that it burned thru it and fucked up the wires going into the ECU!!!

You don't need an entire new shock, just get a heavier spring and new damping valves, prob can have someone do the whole thing for a couple hundred bux.

Suspension adj is kinda like religion, everyone has the beliefs and lots o folks say the rear needs to be soft with lots of travel. I dunno but I find I need about 2" of travel with my new shock.

Good luck man! Keep us posted.
