Blown Clutch basket

Has anyone blown up there stock clutch basket and what was the damage?

I blew mine up at the strip the other day. Would it be adviseable to rebuild the entire motor or just clean out all the metal shaving and repair what ever else is damaged in my motor or transmission.
I don't know the extent of the damage to the motor yet but i do know I don't have any holes in the engine case.

I was going down the dragstrip and could not get the bike to shift into third gear. I tried to shift in to third gear three times and when it wouldn't shift i grabbed the clutch handle and coasted the rest of the way. The motor idled down and then shutoff by itself.

So if i can patch my motor up what are the chances of metal shaving finding its way into other parts of my motor and destroying it vs. tearing down the entire motor and doing a rebuild?

Any advise is greatly appreciated!

No not a complete motor rebuild, but, I would pull the pan and valve cover, and oilpump out and then douse the crap out of it with brake clean to get all of the little pcs out... at the bare minium you really need to pull the pan and clean it out very well, I would still pull the Oil pump and check for parts and damage to the pump gear...

Would be advisable to pull the crank, mic the journals, check the cylinders. That crap will go anywhere it can...

OR..................... You could live on the edge like most people tend to do
check pan and screens, if it's not to bad down there then you could
just blow it out with with some contact cleaner and a touch o' air. But............
if ya got big coin do what SWFTY say and while your in there just drop one of
them easy APE 1394 bolt on kits.

How easy is it to drop in the ape 1394cc kit. I've already have the carpenter 1290 kit. Will the ape kit be reliable and live with nos( up to 60 shot). Last, but not least isn't there some machining involved with a stroker? Won't i need two batteries or some machining for the starter etc?? My bike made 195 hp on a dynojet , how much more with the stroker? thanks!!

On the whole basket issue, zx9s have this trouble too with big bore kits........

It depends on how hard you abuse the basket.....

with big timeheavy springs, trying to launch like a mad man......., you break the basket.....

with a smooth lock up set up, there is not much shock to it...............

I have a buddy that busted his zx9 basket anytime he launched over 5 grand throwing the clutch.........., with 5 heavy springs......

I plan on getting a basket soon, but I run a VERY weak clutch set up. When I ran Pro ET, for quite some time, I ran two muzzy springs in the clutch............., with 4 holes empty.........

5teen lights all day and smooth as glass, would hook in a carwash............, and 9,3s in the 1/4

Dude, I was kidding on the APE kit, if your 1290 is putting out 195HP stick with it
as the amount you will end up paying for the little HP gain from a stroker is not
worth it. There is a quite a bit of stuff to cut on like you said with the starter gear
and other stuff. Then ya got to try to keep it cool in the summmer.

Pull the clutch backet and oil pan.
Clean everthing with break cleaner and compressed air
put it back together with cleap oil and new filter run it 20-30 minute.
Change oil, not filter.
ride it 100 miles then change oil and filter.
That's what i did.
I also agree with the 1290 over the stroker for a everyday street bike.

everyone has told me, including brock that multis are useless unless you have a datalogger......

my video camera is my data logger, I can tune it very well rewatching runs and seeing what it does. I have done 1.41 with the set up I have right now, tuning to try to get it there all the time......, or better.........,

and yeah, its hookin

with the pro et set up, trying to go balls to the wall, 1.31s and 1.32s, 3.70s, 5.70s......., that was with stock header, open, no pc,
