Strokers: OEM cam chain tensioner, success

In early 2001, conventional wisdom said that a stroker needed a manual cam chain tensioner, cause the OEM clicker made the chain too tight at it's min setting. So I got one and have been using ever since.

However, I've always been unsure how much tension to put on the manual one. Got some good suggestions here a few weeks ago, but Osti said his 1375 has about a thousand passes on the OEM unit, no cam chain or slipper wear. (and I have had LOTS of problems there)

Mounted the OEM unit set at 0 clicks, and the chain seemed real tight. YIKES...

BUT, just fired it up (3am), then removed the unit and sure as shit, it had moved out 1 click (.017").

Seems to work

Thanks Osti

The only problem I ever had was my first attempt with the manual tensioner. OEM for over 7000miles, and now OEM again. The tightness is always there until you turn the motor over during install. That is how I install it now.

Ra,
I did turn it over several times and the fwd side of the chain is definitely more taut than the aft side, but even still it went in kinda tight with no clicks. I was real happy to see it had adjusted to 1 click after blipping the throttle.
(and I am sure my neighbors were very happy to hear my SW at 3am )

Another note...

Mad Mike also runs the stock tensioner. His stroker motor also has hundreds if not thousands of passes on it.

2 of the people in my office had a conference in Houston Monday & Tuesday.

About the tensioner, the thing to remember is , in a problem, the manual will not back out and the factory will. The difference is one cylinder vs several out of time. Pierre had a piston touch a valve in 1 cylinder and using another another persons engine it did not have his manual tensioner and the cam jumped time!
