It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...
Finally broke my best ET on spray (8.77) last night at Gainesville. Ran a 8.69 @ 168 on the trailer, and backed it up with a 8.67 @ 169 (5.79 @ 135) next pass. WooHooo!! Still room for improvement in the clutch and boost controller, but I was pretty damn happy. Not bad for a brick with a small motor, eh?
Third pass it ran a 9.00 @ 164 spinning at the line, and I heard a slight tick in the return road. Oil pressure good, but the mph drop off got me worried. Loaded up and got home - bearing material in the pan. Not good. Not sure what happened. I'm taking it apart today to see what I can see. Once more into the breech. Hopefully it'll be back to gether for next weekend's SEMDRA race. Anyone have any ZX11 rod bearings floating around their shop?

#4 rod bearing was melted - journal looks pretty bad. I'll have it and the rod checked for cracks tomorrow, but it looks like I'm out of commission for a while. #1 was starting to fail, but 2, 3 and all the crank bearings were perfect - strange.

How many passes / miles on this build? Any preliminary speculation on the cause of early failure?

Crank and rod are toast. Spare crank going to Falicon for blueprinting, and a spare rod will be recon'd.
I'm not sure what the cause was - it had plenty of oil, oil pressure was good during burnout, and at idle after the pass. On the last pass, I did develop a fuel leak from one of my lines, so it's possible that my fuel pressure was compromised, and I leaned out and detonated. But the top end looks great, no melted electrodes or scoured piston tops, skirts and bores are perfect. Typically #3 rod bearings go on these motors, and #3 was fine, so I think something other than oil starvation was the trouble.
This motor had about 40 passes and about the same number of pulls on the dyno. Near redline of one pull last week, the boost line popped of the wastegate, boost spiked to 45+ pounds before I could chop the throttle (366hp). I could've hurt it then, but it ran 2 passes Wednesday and 2 passes Saturday at 168/169mph, so it seems unlikely that it would've held on that long before crapping out.
I'm gonna have the banjo bolt feeding oil to the head restricted a bit, and shim the spring on the refief a bit more. While I'm in there I'm tapping the cases for some beefy head bolts, and maybe install a clutch access port. Falicon will be a couple weeks with the crank, so I will miss the first SEMDRA race. Rrrr.

Wow... that's very kind Steve. I can drop one race, but I'd rather not miss this one if I can avoid it. Gimme a call when you get a chance or PM your phone # - edit.

Wow... you folks are too kind. Steve has generously offered his 12 for Saturday, but Tracy I really appreciate it. Next time my motor breaks - I'll call :P

I agree Karl, I'm trying to keep that in mind as I clean parts.... If it had run SLOW and then broke - I'd be a little less sanguine about the whole thing.
Steve is the man of the year as it looks like I will be riding his trusty 12 at tomorrow's TNT at Gville and this Saturday's SEMDRA race in Jackson, SC. Yeehaw! Saved by the board!
Anyway, after doing some more investigation, it looks like my rod clearances, which were all within spec according to the manual (.42-.70mm) may be too tight for a built motor - Steve Rice specs his at .003" - .76mm. I had mine from .45 - 60mm. I will set them all as close to .76 as possible, restrict oil to the head, and shim the pressure relief to 100lbs. And try again.

Yep - i just got back from Steve's, and this bike is beautiful. Red '00, Marchesini wheels, Pro Tek rearsets, Scotts Damper, Akrapovic pipe, pristine shape. Stock wheelbase, 17/48 gearing - should be a handful. Thanks again Steve.

MAN riding a stock wheelbase bike is tough! It powers the front end up at the top of first every time, I was a short-shifting fool all nite. I got nine passes from 7:45 to 10:45 - there were very few cars there. First pass 10.05, second 10.48 wheelie, 9.92, 9.95, 9.92, 10.02, 9.96, 9.98, 9.96, all between 144-145mph. Awesome bike, I'm not doing it justice, but it's a blast to ride. Once again, thanks Steve.
