My ceramic bearing test

I thought i would share my findings of ceramic bearings. My wife and i do roll on tests she has an 2000 model zx12 and mines a 02. Her bike makes 165 hp and mine 195 hp. We run the same gearing (17-48). My bike has marchesini wheels and hers are stock. Amazingly enough our bikes accelerate almost exactly the same rate on rollons. This is due to the huge weight difference between my wife and I. ( roughly 75-80 lb's) My bike still pulls away but initially were about even until my tac shows 10,500 in the upper three gears. Lower gears my bike pulls away sooner.

I had the front and rear wheels bearing replaced (brand new rims) with ceramics. Both bikes had full tanks of gas.
Test 1-5: We did roll ons from 2500 and up in 6th gear. To keep the tests as consistant as possible she would start us off.(just like the fastbike videos)
1st observation, before the ceramics she would pull immediately a bike to 1 1/2 until I caught up to her at 10.5k. This time I was actually right next to her from the start from 2500 rpms until 3500 then she would pull about a bike length. But, I caught up to her at 9900 showing on my tac instead of the usual 10.5k.
Were as i said before we were dead even at 10.5 i was now about 2 bikes in front of her.

We also did roll on tests from 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. I would always go off her mark and we would only stay in it one gear. We generally did all of our roll on testing about 5500 rpm. We spent about and 1 1/2 hours on one of our favorite deserted roads doing these tests.

In the lower gears without the ceramics she would pull immediately until about 7500 rpms. From 7500 rpm's until 9000 I would start to real her back in. And from 10.5- to redline I would catch up and pass her about a bike length.

With the ceramics I noticed I was basically catching her about 600 rpm's sooner.

Other observations: Ceramic bearing were a little bit lighter than stock, they turn easier by hand. The bike is a bit easier to push around. Also engine breaking is a little less predominant.

Last thoughts: I will be testing these little gems at the dragstrip soon. Actually it will be a marchesini wheel and ceramic bearing test. I'm a fairly consistant drag racer, I don't really expect much of an et difference but im hoping for a 1-2 mph average increase in trap speed.

In conclusion, are the ceramic bearing worth having? The answer is yes but only after you have run out of things to do to your bike. Ceramics would not be be my first mod, but they do make a difference. I have pretty much done about everything I can do to my bike in its current configuration and if your looking for every last bit of hp go for it!

No problem fellas, I have gotten alot of valuable information from you guys on this board, and feel its only right to share. My wife is an exceptional women, she loves to ride fasssst. My friend Busashot was there to help as well.
Keep in mind the bearing i replaced were off brand new marchesini wheels. I think ceramic bearing would make a bigger difference on a bike with rims that had more miles.

If you get a chance put the good rims on the slower bike and see what happens.

Here you go. Looks like 400 for wheel bearings and 300 for the tranny.

Or you can buy them direct from World Wide Bearings.

man i'd love to try ceramic bearings, not that i need the performance, but pushin the 12 around is such a bitch. anyone know if this is something that is expected to become alot cheaper in the not-too-distant future?

Ninja 12, thats a great idea! My friend Busashot(01 busa with mild mods) and my wifes bike with me on it our about dead even from a second gear roll(about 5k) up until the beginnning part of fifth gear. Then his bike pulls until he runs out of gear. He wins by about 3-4 bikes at the top of his 6th gear (about 169 radar verified). My wifes bike is good for about 172 give or take. 17-48 gear.

Osti id love to try the transmission bearing, any idea how much they cost to install?

Freek breakdown its only money! I'm always looking for go fast parts for my bike, my next mod is the billet basket (maybe it will make a little more hp? lighter?, titanium bolts for the wheels, wave rotors, $1100 gas tank that is said to save 7 1/2 pounds,) all this is expensive stuff for sure but think about how much a car guy has to spend to keep up with us!

mrsantafe, The billet basket is a little heavier than the OEM...Its a must for DragRacing though!!!

Try VP race fuel, MR9 - 87 octane for a stock motor...MR1 - 90 octane if you want a bit more...MRX01 - 98 octane for a big motor...These are oxygenated fuels, its instant H.P.
