a NEW clutch mod!!!
well, at least a clutch-related "mod".
I have had problems with oil seeping outa my clutch cover ever since i went to a lock up. Never really thought about it, just used silicone to seal it (PITA when doing lockup set-up). JCheese got me thinking it should seal wo/silicone.
hmmmmm... what to do?
Get the sealing surfaces flat and the OEM gasket should seal, eh? But how to get em flat? Aluminum doesn't make surface grinding easy, so that was out.
I decided to lap the MTC spacer and the clutch cover.
Materials:
- some Prussian Blue (just try to find that at Autozone ),
- some valve grinding paste,
- a flat surface to lap on. This had me stumped until i noticed a nice thick glass door on my wife's china cabinet. That damn door has never hung right so I liberated it.
I put the paste on the glass and lapped the 3 surfaces until there were no low spots. The OEM cover wasn't too bad but one side of the lockup spacer was bad.
After mounting the newly flat parts, the shift shaft spacer was about .010"+/- too long, so i filed it down a tad. Stack height is a bit short w/Muzzy set up anyway, so that's OK.
Bottom line is I installed the spacer and cover just oiling the OEM gaskets (no silicone), heat cycled the bike and NOT A DROP is leaking.
As I was doing this I kept thinking about Vincent Hill; musing that he'd prolly come up a similar solution.

Interesting... I just used 1.5 stock clutch cover gaskets and a dab of silly cone.
Havent any leaks with the MTC.

A dude I know with a red 12 had a similar problem, just used 2 oem gaskets stacked together and and tighten the cover bolts slightly tighter than usual. Done.

You might want to check for a warped clutch cover....Ive probably had mine off more than most in here and still re-use the same gaskets almost all season...How are you removing the clutch cover? Tightening sequence? Just a thought....Chris

the clutch cover was warped a bit, and the MTC spacer had poor maching on one side. The lapping "cured" both, and I do use a tightening sequence.
hopefully all is well now.
