ZX-12 speed limiter and drag racing??
Hello everybody.... I have a question. I have a '02 that I dragrace and it's geared so that it's coming through the traps in 6th close to maxed out. So my question is, could the 6th gear speed limiter be kicking in thinking the bike is maxed out ?? The better my launches and the quicker it gets into 6th the more my speed seems to drop off a couple of mph.
What do you all think ??? Thanks, Roy

no..... 137 to 140 mph. what I'm saying is: does the bike think it's going that fast because of the re-gearing?? I guess I'll have to check the speedo as I cross the line.

Get a speedohealer (speedohealer.com) to fix your error and eliminate the possiblity of the limiter kicking in. Once you have the speedohealer installed, you can go back to the website and enter in your vital data into appropriate locations in the pop up window and the website will calculate the speedo error and even show you how to program the dip switches. I have one and it works brilliantly. Stock speedometer error on my bike was 11%.

Yes, you need to get either a yellow box or a speedohealer.

I hear what you're saying, but, no matter how many gears you (or anyone) are using in the quarter, the more time spent in their top gear the more your MPH will drop off. (compared to having more time in lower gears, less in top gear) It's just physics.

Yeah, but what's more important: ET or MPH?

137-140? How much do you weigh? Why so much gear? Post your timeslip, mods and weight for evaluation.

actually in bracket racing MPH is more important. if you have a decent ET MPH can win races.

I weigh 180 lbs. haven't touched the motor with stock exhaust. The front forks are lowered with a schnitz kit and dogbones in the rear. MTC basket and multi stage lock-up. Pingle bar with a drag slick on a stock lenth arm. 16/55 gearing. NLR two-step.
Best ET so far is 9.71, best 60 foot is 1.51, and best mph is 140 but not all at the same time.......
I have only 4 mtc light springs with 1 thin shim in the clutch. and leave at 6500......
I guess I have it geared so much is to make up for the height of the slick and to get it to leave harder.....

You haven't raced very long have you. You have spent ALOT of money before you have learned to become a good rider on a stock only bike. You simple need more practice, practice, practice!
You sound like another guy on this website, I just cant remember who it was that put wheelie bars and a slick, on his zx12, to barely run 9's......

Yep your right I have not been racing this bike very long... and I understand practice and that's what I've been doing and learning stuff each time I go out.
I chose to spend "alot" of money on the equipment I purchased because I'm going to bracket race this bike and am after consistency and if I don't change anything the bike will run within .005 seconds of it's previous run. So I think I'm heading in the right direction. I need alot of work on my reaction times.
Sorry my bike "only" runs 9.70's but that's why I'm posting questions so as to sqeeze as much as I can out of what I have. Anyhoo... I'm having fun and isn't that what it's all about??

well zxboy, you're right, you are really, really heavily geared, tall tire or not. At your weight, you're geared so much as to probably make the bike harder to ride than it needs to be IMHO.
You should have a target ET in mind if you are bracket racing next year.
You could easily make those 9.70's with only 4 gears instead of 6. Less shifting and probably easier on your parts as well.
There are some great video's that you could watch to learn a good launch technique at dontbescaredracing.com
Or, get more info from MadMike and Wannabe, they are resident bracket racers.

ZXboy, I don't get it, you have spent big$$$$$$$$ on a bracket bike.
Hell I bought an old Hondamatic for 200.00 and I have consistency for the buck. shit I am never off by more than .03
You are spending a lot of money NOT to go fast,
Is there a reason?

Your bike should be going 5-9 mph faster and as mentioned above crossing the line in 4th. Ditch the wheelie bar and slick for a street tire and stock wheelbase and if nothing else stock gearing! launch at 4500 and twist the throttle ASAP dont ride the clutch. With practice you should be seeing solid 9.70s, gear it 16/44 and you should see low .60s with some seat time.

that is my point that for next to nothing a can win all day in bracket. the money you are spending to win a throphy or a 100.00 doesn't make sense but it is your money.
I spend money to go fast is for HEADS UP racing you know real drag racing.
PS my hondamatic is 19.01 in the 1/4 just remember that as you are holding the clutch in reving and waiting for 10 sec. on the starting line

I will ET race you anytime JC! you still have to cut a light, and that hondamatic is effected 100x more then my 12 is by wind... and we ET race for a 1000 bucks a race up here not a hundred. in all honesty, some of us are to big to Heads up Race. or do not have the 10-12 thousand dollars that it would take to go that fast and be competitive.

see that makes more sense to race for 1K vs. 100.00.
I guess that is the differance.
And yes the wind must be adjusted for I borrowed a wind gauge last time because I lost when the wind kicked up.
as for lights that is no problem

I have that say set up.. (1) What are you launching at?? you should be leaving at around 8K to 9K any more than that and you blow the tire away. (2) What are you shifting the bike @?? You should be shifting at 11,600 or red line. If you short shift 1 and 2 you will hit the speedlimiter not the rev limiter.
I have had the same set up on my bike 16/55 and now running a 16/56 and may go to a 16/57 next year. Do not use a 15/55 set up as you will hit the speedlimiter 100 feet before the finsh line...
with 16/55 I have run a best E/T of 9.22 @ 145 average E/T is 9.30 to low 9.40 at the same 144 to 145 mph..
Are you still running the muffler?? If so take it off and you will go from 9.70 to 9.40 in 1 pass... Been there done that...

JC... I understand where your coming from with the low buck approach for bracket racing. You must really get the other lane nervous with that much of a head start !! Yeah your right it is my money and I'm still learning
(got to crawl before I can run) But I've got some good equipment for when I decide I want to go "fast".....
Dr. Joe... I'm leaving at 6700 and shifting at 11,400. How will going to a steeper gearing keep it from hitting the speed limiter ?? Won't I get to it quicker ?? And yes I'm running the stock muffler with cat......
What are your short times ?? What exhaust ?? What wheel base?? etc ??

plus, the 15-tooth sprocket up front will totally have the chain grinding down on your swingarm.
