clutch problems

I recenty had a clutch failure. Clutches started slipping. So i removed them and found one bad fiber. Looked like the outer edge of the pad was gone. IT wore threw the pad into the metal. BUt just in a two to three mm wide strip all the way around. No other fibers where worn like this. SO i replaced this one and clutch seems ok but i have a lot of free travel. any ideas i just had put in a clutch cushion. 01 gsxr 1000 prob about 40 passes on this clutch

Better drop the oil pan and check the oil pump screen to make sure the fibers are not clogging the screen. Might want to also check your steels if they are warped and measure your fibers to whatever the factory specs them at.

how do u go about checking your steels i laid them flat on a table. The looked straight. As far as the oil goes im changing it right now but there dont seem to be any metal in it. I have check it real well i think it just barely scraped the fiber just enough to change the color. Its only one thousandth of an inch below the rest .

Two ways to check the steels.

Use a sizeable piece of glass as it will be perfectly flat,.....or,....I put all my steels next to each other and hold them in my hand while looking for gaps.
I then move a steel to see if the 'gap' moves with it or stays put because it was the adjacent steel plate.

Got ya. But i did look at them and they didnt look bad to me at all. Here is the thing if this plate was warped the other fiber it hits against should have shown some abnormal wear. Or atleast i would think. If one side was hitting at the top wouldnt the other side be hitting at the bottom.

I jsut had the clutch out of this thing less than a week ago. I personally think i might have got some type of grit in this thing something very light that would really affect steel. Plus i didnt have any problems till i put in this kit. All of a sudden im having to adjust clutch a lot. LIke every three passes. I havent adjusted the other one a single time. More than 60 passes on it. Who knows but i got me a new clutch anyways.

Well i stand corrected. I Found several bent steels one being real bad where the last clutch fiber was worn out an another on the way. Will these bent steels cause the clutch to slip.

Are you using o.e.m. steels and fibers? O.E.M. are far better than any aftermarket fibers or steels. Aftermarket are good for street riding but not at the dragstrip. Trust me I know

Do you think you're slipping the clutch out longer, or launching at a higher RPM than on the previous clutch pack? If so, that might explain why you are adjusting more now.

When we start out and are timid or learning the bike, I think we're all not as aggressive as we become a month or three later.

damn right ba The aggressive this so right. But i had four bent steels plus after a few cal. my clutch had over 100 passes. So i think i got the good out of it for sure.

based upon that answer, I don't think you've got anything "wrong" or "bad" there,.....just the symptom of excessive heat build-up which warps the steel plates, caused by high rpm and slipping the clutch out.

Correct me if that's wrong.

When you read about many of us 12R guys making "oiling" mods or waiting 15-30 between some runs, it's to prevent that warping.

Ditto the move to the "muzzy clutch kit"....it uses all 2.0mm steels instead of the thinner ones, thus they dont' warp quite as easily.

when you take your clutch plates out, are they dry-ish or are they slightly wet with oil film?
