lm-1 data logger: airbox temp

Once again this thing showed how easy it is to set up and use.

I did a "science fair project" and tabulated the output v of the airbox temp sensor against actual temp of a quart of oil. 150F down to about 60F. Got a 75pt curve and input 4 representative points to the LM-1 data logger options setup screen.

TOOOOO COOOL: the data logger showed a rise from 85F garage temp to 98F body temp when I grabbed the temp sensor.

I can't believe how EASY this thing is!

Now I can look at track mph against airbox temp in successive passes; my 1st pass is always the fastest one, and I have long wondered about heat soaking of the airbox. Now I can find out.

Well, if the fukken rain would go away, I could find out; no track tonight

Ninja12:
yes indeed some REAL INTERESTING conclusions on airbox temp/mph.

These are prelim, only one night at the track, but if the damn weather ever clears up, i'll get more info.

pass#1 (right off trailer)
airbox temp went from 93F to 92F (staging/shutdown)
mph = 154

pass #3 (motor heat soaked)
airbox temp went from 101F to 97F (staging/shutdown)
mph = 152

air
pass #1: 91F, 29.9"Hg, 55%rh = 97.9%hp factor
pass #3: 84F, 29.9"Hg, 74%rh = 98.4%hp factor

What's interesting is that the tack air improved between pass #1 and pass #3 (temp decreased), but my mph was DOWN????? WTF?????

However, when you plug the ave airbox temp into the hp factor calculator you get:
pass #1 = 97.6%hp factor
pass #3 = 94.8%hp factor
ie my hp was apparently DOWN by 2.6% (5.5hp) (heat soaked airbox) as the night progressed; not up 0.5% as I would have calculated based on falling track temp.

cool tool!!!!

my fastest pass has almost always been right off the trailer, maybe now I understand why. maybe...

Do you have any insulation between the frame/motor?

I'm with TB, i'll bet that a heat blanket, maybe two, would help.

yes he does Have heat insulator but it is such a big peice of metal (frame) that it is going to be a problem I think.
I am thinking heat sinks? on the frame

With the volume of air moving through the airbox on a pass, I don't see how airbox temp while staging would be a factor. The air moving through is moving fast enough to not be affected by the frame. My opinion. Other variables also could be contributing such as eating at the track after the first pass.............hahahaha

ra12r,
you are partially correct in that moving air does drop the airbox air temp, but apparently NOT to ambient if the airbox is heat soaked.

1st pass
track air temp was 91F,
staging airbox temp was 93F, it dropped to 92 by big end

3rd pass
track air temp was 84F,
staging airbox temp was 101F, it dropped to 97 by big end

as far as eating between passes; well, TFA members MUST keep their energy levels up, eh???

BTW: i keep qualifying my conclusions with "seemingly", "apparently" because I am not sure about any conclusions, I am just reporting what i am seeing.

question, I wonder if the air temp gauge is staying hotter than the air flowing through during the pass. My guess would be yes, otherwise the temp gauge would not cool down during the pass. I don't think the air temp guage is responding quick enough to measure real time air temp changes. What you think?

If he is reading the one Kawi put in it then that is what it would be reading and unless they compensated for it in the ECU (doubt it).

I cant imagine that the sensor would be made of a material that held heat THAT well...also given that the velocity and volume of the air flowing through the airbox would most certainly keep it from remaining hotter than the incoming air IMO.

Sure it may not be accurate to a degree of the air itself...but looking at ent's results...pretty obvious it records changes rather well.

yep, using the one kwak put there. Its response time is pretty fast; not instaneous but fast.

Okay it looks like you need to pick up some dry ice for the next race and cool down the frame

Karl missed a GOOD night at the track last night . Temps in the low 80s, as many passes as you wanted. Track wasn't hooking as good as usual but we were running turbo bikes so...Could have been a good night for back to back testing but I think Karl had to stay home so he could catch the Golden Girls on the tube.

No problem I send it off the the welding shop on Saturday to have the bung welded and will be picking up today. Now if I only could kick all the customers bikes out of the shop I could put my turbo on and try it
