24v starting circuit: DAMN it spins fast!!!!
Yesterday I hooked up a lil 12 v Interstate battery in series between the starter relay and the starter. Put a pig tail connector so I can charge it as it is out of the charging circuit. Since I have relocated my primary battery out of the battbox, the lil sucker fit right into the battbox; no installation headaches.
WHOA! goddamn it spins fast when bike is cold! I'm a bit wondering if spinning that fast is good for the starter, but Ra12r and lots of big-block Busa guys have done it...
I haven't yet tested it when the temp guage is at 9 or 10pm but if the weather holds, i'm going to T&T this afternoon. Forecast today is for unseasonably cool August weather for Houston, low 90's
If this works and doesn't tear up the starter too fast, i'm gonna be kicking my TFA for not doing it 2 years ago.

24v system works good on our Busa. Doesn't matter how warm it is.

You could relocate it to under the head light for more weight upfront, right?

bossman,
yep you could pretty easily put it up front but it only weighs about 4# and having it lower in the battbox vs higher up front might be a wash in terms of center of gravity. i dunno????
Also, I re-wired my battery/starter circuit w/4guage cables and there would be the extra weight of the cables going from battbox to up front then back to the starter.
Most of all, it was REAL EASY to put it in the battbox

14.5-14.7:1; cold cranking 250-255psi
It was starting fine at 9pm temp guage, but getting iffy at 10pm; i thought what the hell, time for 24v

MAN O' MAN does the 24v work!
Went to the track and even tho I was unable to focus, the 24v really worked. I did a back to back set of passes when the engine was fully heat soaked. On the second pass I dumb-ass stalled it on the line and it started right up.
Now that I am am tuned into the sound of 24v starting, I hear supposedly "stock" bikes using it.
"Stock"... bahahahahahahaha

Exactly on the other "stock" bikes.....LOL But, it does make things less stressful when you KNOW the bike will turn over with no issues at ANY time!!! Glad for YA...smile

Any chance of burning up the starter with the 24v system? Can you just add a 2nd battery in parallel to give you more juice and keep it at 12v?

i dunno how long the starter will last but the busa guys have been doing this for a long time without problems. we'll see...
As far as adding another battery in parallel, I don't think that would help as much as going to 24v.
I replaced my OEM batt with a FBG batter (bigger than OEM), and that helped but didn't cure hard starting.
I then did all the tricks, like clean starter brushes, 4 guage cables, etc, and that helped but didn't cure.
So, I went to a 15lb MOJO gelcell in a battbox hung in front of the r tire. That cured my hard starting till I went back to real high compression.
24v seems to really have cured it. Yesterday I was purging air from the coolant system, running the temp up to 11pm. Did a test at 11p temp gage and it started right up .
I'm a believer.

wezze93,
a trick set up would be to put the lil batt up front somewhere, as low as possible. in the cowling by the headlights, down near the radiator... I was too lazy.
you are running the Muzzy MMS???? ("muzzy box") now THAT's trick!!!

I too have the CO2 muzzy air tank in my tail. The trick is your arrangement of the things in the tail. Second, the size of the "GelCell" you get. Sort of measure your space needs and see. I had initially thought to put both batteries in the frame space by relocating the relay/fuse complex. My gell cell is about the same size as the complex. But that was going to be more trick work and I wasn't that energetic.
Running the circuit in parrallel will only extend "life cycle time". That would work great if you were manually running your fan in traffic all day or have a bunch of trick lighting or something. But, it in NO WAY affects the starter spin power!!! It will only extend the amp hrs available.

i don't know of a specific spot up front to put it, but the aux batt is small enough that there's gotta be a place. to get 24v you'll have to run cables from the aux batt neg terminal back to the starter relay, and the aux batt pos back to the starter. That's a fair distance so i'd use 4guage cables, but I'm just guessing; no expert, me.

I wired my 24v by running both cables to the relay box and then inserting the 2nd battery in line after the relay box. pos-neg-pos.
Disconnect the cable to the starter at the relay. Connect the neg to the relay and the pos to the cable. This retains the stock cable running to the starter.
I used 8 gauge cable from home depot. I tried 6 guage but that was actually too stiff. However, these were not battery cables just regular wire. Then i got some connectors from home depot and went to work.

Which battery (brand & model) are you guys using. What size is it. This is going in a friend's busa so I want to see where it will fit. Thanks.
