silly swingarm question
Does an extended swingarm flex? Say it was about 6"-8" over.
I'm curious because a bike I got to ride tonight (12R) had a long chrome arm on it, and only in 1st gear and half - most of 2nd gear, if I was really laying into the gas it would feel as if the chain was jumping on the sprocket.
It wasn't pretty at all, i gotta tell ya!
So, I ease off the gas a bit until halfway through second gear and then get back in it smoother and complete the run without any other problems.
Still went 9.55 at 151 and 121mph at the 1/8th. (ok, it's bigger than 1199cc)
I only made two passes and it did it each time. (we thought we had it fixed on the second pass)
the swingarm is not braced, by the way.
I did check the sprocket and it didn't look "bad" but there was a *small* big of possible rubbing on the left side teeth only.
A friend watching said that the chain was really 'bowed' on the bottem side when I was in the gas. I had JUST tightened the chain too, and made sure it was plenty tight.
Any thoughts?

I never experienced it at 6" over with bolts ons and I'm not known for running my chain tight either. Sounds weird. Maybe the chain is way stretched or something. You sure your not hearing the bottoming of the clutch basket or hub springy things? I can hear em make a little racket on a good leave on my zrx.

There may be some botteming out. The tire, a worn Schinko, does rub a little on the rear fender under the rear seat, but, the real symptom I guess was that 'jerkiness' feeling.... not just the nasty sound that went with it!

I've had that happen on really hard launches before @7inches over and think it is the cush drive.

Always thought the under/over bracing was installed for that reason?

no arm flexes to the point of chain slip. Its probably some jacked off clutch plates that are warped and chatter like hell off the line. Its called the "hucklebuck" when your steels look like C5 brake rotors.....

I have had an arm flex on mine but it did not click! check your front sprocket. and replace your rear sprocket. it could be rounded just enough.

When it happened to me(about 10 out of 300 runs)I can't see any indication that it jumped the sprockets.Front and back looked new.I also have underbracing and clutch was in good condition.????

Hey ARH, that IS a good thought, I wasnt' thinking about that, but, I've had that on MY bike back when it was stock and a few times on my Muzzy Clutch mods because I launch around 5000-8000 rpm and used to burn them up a lot. (a set a month)
It's not that same feeling, trust me. This bike launches good for about 10-15 feet, and then when I really start to hit the gas and dig in, it does this crap. Even moderate riding around pits, with imposed slipping, is not a problem, just the hard launches.
