"Live by the sword. Die by the sword."

I just got back from another race in Sacramento. I managed to qualify #1 again with a 0.012 sec reaction time. (on a 0.400 pro tree.) My mind wasn't in it today. I was trying to break in a new MT slick because I found a cut in the sidewall of my old one. It held air, but I didn't want to take a chance.

Anyway, long story short, I redlit in the first round. Dammit!!!

When you live on the edge on the tree, you sometimes get cut.

hey, here's an outsider's question for all y'all experts: isnt the whole concept of reaction time something of a misnomer? since you have staging lights to predict the green off of, it's not reaction time, it's just timing. personally, i like the idea of a true raection time concept, kinda like they use in F1: you have no warning, the lights just go after a random delay. any reason this system isnt used?

well he is actually using an F1 style of starting on a Pro-Tree, correct me if I am wrong but even in F1, they do some sort of on your marks, get set, and then the lights just go on at an unspecified point. and that is exactly what a Pro tree does. it allows the "on your marks" = pre-stage, "get set" = staged, and now it can be anywhere from instant go to 7 seconds before the lights go. you just never know. now on a full tree, like I race on. it is more a a timing issue not just a blank reaction.
hope that explaines a little.

Freek,

Just to clarify what Mike said, a pro tree shows all three ambers followed by green 0.400 seconds later. A sportsman tree lights up the three ambers individually 0.500 seconds apart with the green coming 0.500 seconds after the last amber. Yes, reaction time is more of a timing issue on a sportsman tree.

The 0.400 pro tree is pretty dang close to a 'true reaction time' concept. Of course, the way things are going for me these days, I wish that they would change it to a 0.300 pro tree.

rember there are quite a few things you can do to change your launch. try adding a lb of air in the front tire. or depending on where you hold your clutch. change the friction point by a 1/8th of an inch or so. these things will slow you down slightly. and on the tire bit it might be the other way around but experement during some test and tune weekend.
Alot of little things can make a difference on a pro-tree. even your gearing will change the way you come out of the hole differnent! You want to change your bike NOT YOURSELF! if your in the groove and you want to back it off some then make some small changes to the bike before you try and change yourself! and One thing to think of is it is Much better to be just a hare to quick then being to slow and not being able to adjust to that.
Mad Mike..
am I giving out to many secerets here??? LOL.....

thx for the explanations guys. i see now how the pro tree is fairly close to true reaction time, but i'd still like to see a system of pure reaction speed, as in the rider who reacts fastest to a light gets the edge, not "fastest but not too fast" as the current system works (as i understand it). of course, i'm not suggesting u change an entire sport just to suit my whims, so carry on

Freek, there are actually some tracks back East running an 'instant green' tree that doesn't show any ambers. In that case, it's exactly what you want. I would personally love that.

quikrr, sorry, man. I'd love to get some money out of the old tire, but if I don't feel safe on it, I wouldn't feel right selling it to someone else.

quikrr, it's a Mickey Thompson 7" slick. It looks like a car tire. It's not something you use on the street.
