Mad Mike
Hey Mike...Listen, I have a question. Every spring my frinds and I go to the local 1/4 mile drag strip for the Penn/Ohio Sportbike Challenge in Ohio. We're by no means drag racers but we go up for bragging rights. I'm 6'5 280, my bike isn't lowered or anything...what is the best gearing for me to use and will strapping my front end down help me any? I hate to say this but my hardest race last year was against my buddy on his 954RR...he's only about 160lbs though. What RPM should i be launching at...i can't launch that bike for shit..it wants to stand up on me all the time...any input would be appriciated..thanks.

You got it! first thing Yes a strap will help!! a bunch! also get a set of lowering links! you can have the one's with holes in them or the adjustable one's. Now your going to have to take a saturday to put everything on, but it is worth it!
do you have anything else done to your bike??
what gearing do you have? I would go with a 17t on the front and leave the stocker on the rear. that will actually stretch your tire back about 3/4" and this will help you launch.
finally launch rpm.. that "totally" depends on how you launch! for a stocker. I would start around 4grand and get on the gas as fast as you can without the front wheel coming up. here it just takes practice! I slip my clutch and work the gas at the same time. you have to do them together! practice that roll/slip, roll/slip, and some people might laugh but you do not have to even be on your bike. you can do it anywhere. well people might think your very strange if your doing it in church.. lol... but your two hands need to work together! throttle and clutch!! and dont worry about your lights right now. you will all be in the same boat here, so worry about your launch!
and let me know when the event is and if I can make it maybe I will try!
Hope this helps! and the more you practice the better you will be!

What Mike said!!!
I will add this though, I say do a 17-48 set up because your a big dude and you dont need to change the OEM chain...I recommend it because most beginners in DragRacing especially on ZX12s bog it a few feet out from the launch and the 17-48 combo will pull you out of the low rpm faster...
Just my .02 cents...

I have a full Yosh RS-3 Race Exhaust, K&N Filters and a PC3 with the Yosh Map on it. The gearing I have now is 17/49..i'm into the wheelies though, but i still have the stock rear. to put those links on, do I have to take the exhaust off because the bottom shock bolt looks pretty close to the pipe...can you get a wrench or socket on that thing??? That race is Aug 1st at Quaker City Drag Strip. It's called the Buell Sportbike Challenge..it's a good time.

Is there a problem with loading the bike onto a trailer with the links in the lowest setting?

you just have to watch when you load it you can use two ramps to space it out so it does not hit on the bottom. that is what I have done.
and BK. all you have to do is slip the clutch... and get rid of that 49 tooth sprocket right now. and only for now. you need less gear and more wheelbase! for sure. and you say you like to wheelie, well just hold this one off of the ground about 8" and you will be #1!
Mad Mike.
1bad12R, I will not be in atlanta as of right now. I have to watch my $$ this season, and I am tired of being treated like crap at Prostar! I am going to attend a few of the other events like MIRRock series, and then The Texas Shootout, and then some $1000+ races this season! I really enjoyed atlanta, actually it was one of my favorite tracks! but I am having a hard time throwing away a thousand bucks+ to attend an event where I am going to be treated like crap!
and BK, dude if I do not have anything going on that weekend, I will try and make it!!

Let me know..it's only like $15.00 and you race all day..Where would you be comming from? So i need the 17/48 gearing and the bike lowered. What about the bolt on the lower shock mount...can you get a wrench or socket in there without taking the exhaust off???

BK, you are changing your launch style at the track and you should leave it the same as when you are on the street. Do you bog leaving every light or stop sign?!?! I think NOT!!! Why you ask, because you are giving more gas smoothly as you release the clutch. The same principle applies for racing..........Just the same moves taken to the a more intense level. I wouldn't leave much higher than 4000rpm though, and remember do not work your hand in sync. Work them in reverse!!! As the left hand opens and moves away from you, the right hand should close and move toward you. You MUST MUST learn this first before spending the time and money making changes. Spend the same time practicing and you will notice a BIG change without any bike changes. Just mY 2$

Awwww Hell, You beat me to it!!
I was just going to say what a great time it would be to be there! Another 12R from Ohio to support the Clan! Sounds like we could make this one hell of an event! heheheeee
I'm marking my calendar! Depending upon it's exact locale within Ohio, we may have to have a caravan of 12's on the Interstate!

It is in Salem Ohio...where will all of you be comming from??? You can visit the site at www.quakercityraceway.com there are directions on there but let me know where all of you will be comming from. I want to be in the ZX-12R clan. BTW if you put the lowering links on do you have to remove the exhaust...that bottom bolt looks pretty tight, can you get in at it???

If you have a stock exhaust yes. but the trick is to reverse the bolt! then you never have to worry about it again. pulls in and out easy from the left side.
oh and I live in Iowa.
and RA, part of the reason on the street you do not wheelie so much is tire slippage, and you dont get that at the track. you get hook.

Well I for one drive around town like I'm launching off the starting line, I don't know about you folks!!
it's really a wonder that I've not been pulled over by the po-po more often in town. Every stoplight is an opportunity to practice the clutch slip, twisty throttle!
I'll be coming from Dayton Ohio. Roughly 60 miles SE from Columbus.
12RGirl and hubby are in the Detroit-area I believe.
