TFA Qualifies #1 and scores a personal best.

I just go back from Sacramento Raceway where they were having another race in their Summit series. The sun came out, and it was a gorgeous day. There was about a 7mph cross wind, but it didn't affect things too much on the track. Luckily, no cars oiled down the track this week, so we managed to get it two qualifying runs.

Before the first run, I went down the staging lanes and asked everyone if they were up for a qualifying jackpot with a $1 buy-in. #1 qualifier takes the pot. Everyone kicked down for the extra side pot. (I guess the title already gives this part away.)

I'll break it down run by run for those of you with short attention spans.

Round #1:

OK, so it's the first run of the day. I'm a little anxious, but I decide to take it easy because of the mistake I made at the previous race. At that race, I attacked the tree so hard that I redlit and ended up at the bottom of the ladder. So, I take it easy and ended up cutting a 0.033 light. (This is on a 0.400 pro tree.) I bogged gnats ass off the line and still ran the following numbers:

60 ft - 1.516
330 ft - 4.056
1/8 mi - 6.185
1/8 mph - 115.525
1000 ft - 8.037
1/4 mi - 9.628
1/4 mph - 142.089

I knew that something good was going to come in the next round. I ran .01 off of my personal best even with a slight bog off the line.

Round #2:

Since I bogged in the first pass, I decided to go up by half a psi in the rear tire for the second pass. This worked out well. I cut a decent 0.020 light to put me in the #1 qualifier position. Here are the numbers from this run:

60 ft - 1.496
330 ft - 4.010
1/8 mi - 6.143
1/8 mph - 115.293
1000 ft - 7.990
1/4 mi - 9.581
1/4 mph - 141.933

This was outstanding!!! In one run, I cut the best light of the day, won the qualifying pot, and ran a personal best ET. My previous best ET was a 9.618. What's cool is that I know that there's more ET to be had with just some more minor tweaks. But, at this point, I'm going to leave her alone. She is finally consistent where she is.

Round #1 of eliminations:

There was an odd number of bikes today, so since I qualified #1, I picked up the bye in the first round. I dialed a 9.58 and ran the following numbers:

r/t - 0.051
60 ft - 1.517
330 ft - 4.024
1/8 mi - 6.153
1/8 mph - 115.478
1000 ft - 8.000
1/4 mi - 9.593
1/4 mph - 141.868

I was on freakin fire. 9.593 on a 9.58 dial. If I could do this the rest of the day, nothing was going to stop me. I was a bit disappointed with my reaction time, but I didn't worry about it too much. For some reason, I always seem to cut bad lights on bye runs. I don't know why.

Round #2 of eliminations:

This is where it got ugly. The guy I raced saw what I was doing in the right lane, so he put me in the left. After the first round, the lane selection goes by a coin toss. I lost the coin toss. This is where you should always listen to your instincts. I have made what feels like a gazillion passes at Sacramento raceway. In everyone of those days, the left lane always seemed to have a little more traction than the right. I knew this, but I chose to ignore this knowledge. I decided to just go ahead and run the exact same setup as I did in the previous round. (which was in the right lane.)

Long story short, I cut a bad light and bogged off the line. I ended up running a 9.76 on my 9.58 dial. Dammit!!! I should have put in an extra 1/2 psi in the rear like my instincts were telling me. Oh, well. That's racing. At least I have another race next weekend.

So, even though I'm feeling like I'm cursed to never make it past the second round, I still feel good about today. I qualified well and pulled in a personal best ET.

I hope you guys get to race soon.

wannabe,
What an excellent report, thanks!
Your reaction times look fantastic and your 60's are wicked, bad luck about that last run.
Seems you have strong instincts, trust them next time and use the force!

Thanks guys. I actually came up with another lesson this morning while I was in the shower. I'm pretty sure that my bad light in the second round of eliminations had a lot to do with me waiting for him to leave instead of focusing completely on my light alone. He dialed a 10.20 to my 9.58. I figured that I would have a good feel for when my light was going to come. I ended up cutting an .081 light to his .025. I'm pretty sure that my reaction time was affected because I changed the way I was looking for it. In the previous rounds, I just focused on my light.

Oh, well. Next week....
