1361 crank - should I question the quality?

I'm not real happy with the physical appearance of the crank. It would appear that they took a lot of material out for balancing (which I know is normal) but specifically on one counterweight the drilling was off center somewhat. Should I assume it is fine? The Lunati stroker in my Z28 didn't look like this; it has precisely drilled holes.

This is what I am talking about:

Looks somewhat sloppy but as long as it's balanced I assume it's fine. Anyone else's look like this?

I looks awfully sloppy. Mine wasn't like that at all. Did you get the kit from muzzys? And did they have the crank done by falicon or one of there other guys. They were getting a little backed up with orders for the cranks anf Falicon wasn't turning them around tp fast. Maybe its a lemon. Before you put it in id have it checked....

I just looked at your aditional photos and it doesnt look like a falicon crank. Ive had a few cranks done by them and they all shared the same characteristics which yours doesnt apear to have
Its a good kit though, i put mine in in may and have had good luck with it. I just tore it down to change the rods and do some head work. Its all back together now.

Mine looks nothing like that. I had a hard time telling that it was rebalanced at all. I think they just drilled the existing holes deeper on mine. I'm not too sure I'd accept it.

Muzzys

I sent Doug an email and currently awaiting his response. Hopefully they will be able to tell from the photos what my concerns are. I've pasted some higher resolution pics here:

The others ones are # 74, #75 and # 68 (just change the last two digits in the link) for the high res snaps.

IMHO....The crank doesnt look very good. With the way the balancing holes are drilled it is sure to cause stress risers. Ive never had any bike cranks balanced but none of my car cranks looked like this. Even if Muzzys says it ok, I would ask for another one just to be safe since there are no warranties on race parts. If that thing goes your gonna tear up a whole lot more than just the crank. And for the price of that kit it should be gold plated anyway.

I would like to see a larger picture like the first one you posted. I see a bigger problem than the web drilling! On the side of the web there is an area that looks like weld void, the dark pits. Also on the rod journal there appears to be some void/discoloration where there should be a nice little radius at the cheek to journal junction after the machining/grinding/polishing operations. Anybody who builds their own engine, be sure you have a chamfer on the bearings. In other words the outside edge of the bearings needs a little chamfer to clear the radius at the journal to web junction.

I looked at the pictures MM posted of his engine build-up and took a good look at the visible portions of the crankshaft. The factory balance holes are not centered either but are away from the web walls. It looks like when it was balanced after stroking they just enlarged the original holes, causing the break-out. I would like to see the counterweight trimmed to reduce weight.
