Clutch basket let go (huge pics)

Orlando Speedworld... new best (10.15 @ 142mph)

I go through the traps, cut the throttle, bike starts to vibrate. Pull the clutch in. Pick up my ticket, bike vibrates over 5k rpm. Park bike. Notice very small crack in clutch cover.

Obviously a billet basket is in order, and I ordered a Muzzy clutch kit.

Get bike home, pull cover, basket is missing two of the "fingers".

I find these pieces inside the housing. Not a whole lot of damage in the area.

Here's where it gets a lil scary. I pull the oil pan off, find a couple larger pieces, then I empty the oil out of it and find this...

Strain some of the oil as it's coming out, and find this...

I haven't cut the oil filter open yet. All the drive gears are fine. Is this something I should be really worried about ?

Oh! and you will want to pull the water pump...then the oil pump rotor and inspect it. It will have nics in the lobes from aluminum going through it. The oil goes through the oil pump before it goes through the filter.

I would replace the rotor.

Hey Matt - don't feel too bad, looks like you "lucked out" on the amount of damage that could have occured. I just put a Muzzy billet basket and clutch kit into my baby - best damn upgrade I've ever done besides the muzzy pipe . A grenade like that is the PERFECT excuse to upgrade to the basket and clutch!

WARNING - wheelies come with much less fear of clutch damage after the Muzzy upgrades.... !!!!

That last pic is a funnel with a strainer in it... sick bastards. I'd expect that from Harry, not Doug Meyer, lol

I'll check the oil pump in the morning. Thanks for the help

What year12r, my 00 basket went at 1400 miles while in a second gear wheelie, shook so bad in the air when it let go i pulled over to check the old( ass dyno) to make sure there was no oil leakage!, replaced mine with an 01 unit, there is a dif, part number and price, got the muzzy mod, and 21000 miles later no problems. The little black pieces, are probly from your oil filler cap, mine was.

It's a 2000. 8000 miles. I don't do many wheelies, and when I do, it's a 1st gear power wheelie. It does have 101 drag strip passes on it though.

Muzzy clutch kit on order. Sending out my basket to Falicon today. Gonna check out the oil pump today as well.

Ok, I've come to the conclusion that the service manual isn't of the "ZX-12R for dummies" variety, lol.

Oil pump rotor has a few tiny scratches on it. The rotor housing has some nicks in it, nothing major. I ordered a new oil pump set anyway just to be safe. (Rotors, rotor housings, feel like I'm talkin about a rotarded wankel, lol). I'll post some pics later.

The pickup screen had some debris in it, nothing huge. Cleaned it out and re-installed it.

Basket is on it's way to Falicon. Other misc parts are in route. Hope to be up this time next week.

I have to say, this has been one heck of a learning experience.

Any other advice is much appreciated.

Here's one:

Don't forget to put the drain plug back in before pouring the oil back in the bike.

Got my Akrapovic full race/CF today. Along with the PC3R and Muzzy clutch kit. Basket is already at Falicon, probably be back Tues.

Just need the oil pump rotor set, oil filters, and a couple gaskets to arrive from Ron Ayers and I'll be back in action shortly.

You DID get a bit lucky that you didn't have more damage I think!

Anyway, if it makes ya feel better, I have a 2000 with 11,000 miles on it and I also had similar small metal bits in the bottem of my oil pan and I've never had a basket break. I've been Muzzy clutch kitted since day one.

I don't think you'll have problems, but obviously the flush-through with a cheap oil, pick-up cleaning are in order.

Plenty of guys have had some bottem ends come apart with clutches breaking, you got a little lucky! (that's the silver lining approach.)
