Another Computer Question (XP)

This has to do with the Task Manager.

What's Kernel Memory? You have Paged and Nonpaged. What are those? What should they be?

How about Commit Charge? You have Total, Limit, & Peak. What are they?

I've been having computer problems.

Kernel memory is memory used by the operating system kernel and device drivers.

Paged is memory that can be copied to the paging file, thereby freeing the physical memory.

Nonpaged is memory that remains resident in physical memory and will not be copied out to the paging file.

Commit Charge is memory allocated to programs and the operating system. Total is physical memory + amound of page file in use.

Limit is total physical memory available + total page file (maximum you can use).

Peak is the highest it's been so far since reset (boot).

Cool. Thanks.

My computer at work has been crashing. I have not found a common denominator yet.

The single most silly thing about all flavors of Windows is the Windows registry. It is LARGE, UNDOCUMENTED and runs everything from the core system components to applications. Most REALLY rough problems can ultimately be traced back to the registry. Unfortunately, it is easier for most people to just back up their data and re-build there machines than it is to fix registry issues. .

Not only is the registry a kluge; it's a hacker's gold mine. If you know when, where, and how to look, you can snag the admin's login and password.

some crappy programs will have "memory leaks" as well, and they do not 'clean up' after themselves well when shut-down.
Then, the next application comes along and tries to use that memory space and boom...crash.

Some screensaver programs are like that....
Pay close attention to the last program closed as well as obviously the ones in use when things crash.
