2000 ZX12R

Hello all, new guy here, As you can see, I go buy Yamahakid, have been since 1967, that should give you a clue of where I'm at in life . . . anyway, I am the current owner of a '00 R1. The reason I have searched the internet for this board is to ask advice of people with knowledge of the, in my opinion, baddest Bike on the planet, the ZX12R!! I have an opportunity to purchase a brand new 2000 ZX12R from the local Dealer at a very reduced price. I have scanned the Internet for articles and all the older Sport Rider, Motorcyclist, Cycle World, etc., mags for info and although a few little quirps seem to be there, nothing that can't be cured pretty easily. What is the overall concensus of this board of the 2000 model. Anything I should be aware of, aviod, alter, or just go ahead and spend thousands more and get the latest and greatest?
Thanks in advance,
Yamahakid

get the 2000

If you can get a 2000 for a couple grand or so less than a 2002, DO IT! Spend that 2 grand on Akro, Muzzy clutch, basket, and PC3r.

Make sure it is green, cause the defects all got red plasticand were sent to USA. I believe that Michigan got one of the very, very few good red ones, but the rest are defective.

OK Guys, great news for sure, thanks for the replies.
That is the kind of things I wanted to hear!
Lets say I don't put any pipe etc., on and just leave it stock, is the '00 still the one to get? I like the speed limter not being there for sure and the one I am looking at is the "Green" one.
Thanks again,
Yamahakid, maybe "X" Yamahakid!!

Lots of good mods, the bike responds *very* well to tuning. Ie; 180+ hp from a stock bike with a pipe/pcIIIr/k&n combo

A Great man once said "Free your mind and your Ass will follow" That great man was George Clinton! Fuck the mags they have been hard on the 12 since day one. Personally I love mine and I have nothing but a Muzzy Pipe and some chrome parts. I think the bike is great. The fuel sending unit was a pain in the dick but other than that I have not had a problem. Plenty of power and decent comfort. I was able to handle a little better rider on an RC51 through the tight stuff and blow past him soon as it got STR8

leave it stock??? WHOA!!!!! That's a way to have your ZX12 stand out in a crowd!!! N/J.

I have not seen ONE Zx12 with a stock pipe since I bought mine a yr and a half ago. OK, that's not exactly true, Hayward has a Silver (which I saw only once, a year ago), with a bazooka.

Update . . . I went to deal for the '00 ZX12R today and it was sold! Darn! So anyway they had an '01, also green, still there so I delt with them on it. I didn't buy yet, one reason I wanted to get an opinion about the '01 from ya'll. I know you suggested the '00 as the better one to get, but they are willing to allow me $8800 for my '00 R1 so it's like $3500 out of pocket, out the door price, tax, title, tag and all! I'm not so sure I want the '01 after your comments on the '00 though. I have found a Red '00 at a dealer 8 hours from my home who is willing to "deal" also, so now, what next, go for the local '01 or the long distance '00? By the way, if I went with the '01, can I get rid of the speed limiter?
Thanks again for all the response to my questions.

No problem getting rid of the restrictions. Since it's still at the dealers make sure they took care of the couple of recalls Kawi had on em.

If I read your post right I'd find another dealer. You said $8800 trade + 3500 out of pocket. I think others here would agree that 12,300 out the door is way too much for an '01

There are several ways to remove the speed restriction.

If you've got $12k go for the '02.

My personal opinion as an owner of an '01 is that the only thing better about the '00 is the speedo goes to 220 and the FI is not restricted. ( I think a lot of the '00 guys are just trying to justify all the money they spent on the early '00s ) Besides I didn't have to go through the hassle of replacing my gas tank and/or fuel sensor.
