Help me wheelie...
I've been practicing with my DRz400 ... I can get it up in 1st, and I can get it up in 2nd... prob is I need advice on how to shift from 1st to 2nd during the wheelie.. do I use the clutch? trying to shift without the clutch seems to offset the balance of the bike and make me veer off to the left... that's my question and I'm stickin to it.

I use the clutch when going from 1st to 2nd in a wheelie. The hard part is "balancing" the bike on the rear tire. Once you reach the balance point, shifting is a LOT easier. If you are not on the balance point, shifting can lower the wheel if you don't have enough power during the shift. I also notice that on the '12, the "balance" point it pretty high up - scary the first time you feel it, but you will know when you hit it.
REMEMBER - ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS "cover" the rear break with your right foot in case she gets too far up on you. a SMALL tap to the rear break will recover from even the most dire wheelie .

I try not to ride my bike hard. I try not to get it up when I'm riding. But soemetimes I do. Riding a bike is serious business and one should have total concentration for the task at hand and requires the majority of your blood supply to go to your brain.

Wel fish, I'm no expert but.... if ya know it'll go left upon shifting try compensating with a little lean to the right. The reason your going left in the first place is that your probably "trying" to hard with the shift. Try a little more finesse, and not so much force!

I don't even think about the shift. Do you think about the shift when you're accelerating hard (no wheelie) down the road? When it's time to shift, shift! I use the clutch, just like when I'm shifting normally. I'm no expert but it seems to work for me. I did a good one today. Getting my last rides in before putting the bike away for the winter. Was at the balance pt, got scared, backed off, got back on the throttle, came back up but not quite enough, shifted and kept the front aloft for a bit them came down smooth. Felt good!!!

Looped while doing wheelie. Endoed while doing stoppie. Not sure it gets much worse than that. Well, wait, it does. When I was first learning in back in the 70's, I wheelied my Z1 into a car that cut out in front of me. The guy was a motorcyclist, and he let me pay for the damages without reporting it on our insurances or calling the cops. Still one of the coolest "favors" someone did for me when I was younger. Ah yea, the foolish things we do in our youth....

Scared myself trying to find the balance point, or getting there to fast and then coming down hard on the front. Flat spotted exhaust header but not sure if it was from coming down hard from a wheelie or landing after being launched over a crest in the road.
