2000 Clutch question
OK - I have my new clutch parts in hand (thanks Spencer Cycle!)... and I'm going to put them in tonight. I have a question, though. On my 2000, I don't seem to have the part (shim) labeled "92025" on this clutch picture:
http://www.ronayers.com/fiche/400_0476/clutch/clutch.cfm?CFID=2405670&CFTOKEN=20428844
This picture is ALSO the same one that I have in my zx-12 shop manual. Do you guys (2000 owners) have this shim between your clutch rod and and clutch plate? I DO have the needle bearing... just don't seem to have the shim. I ordered a shim from Ron just to be sure... but should I put it in?
Thanks guys!

I'm pretty sure you have to have the steel washer, or shim, between the open needle rollers and the clutch pressure plate. Then the roller bearings run between steel on both sides. It sometimes gets "stuck" on the pressure plate, but it oughta be there.

I had the same problem... you already have the correct parts.... totally ignore the instructions from Muzzy and very closely follow the instructions on spencercycles website. They are much better and will help solve you problem.... here is the link:

oh ok - so the shim kind of sync's into the clutch plate? It seems as though the clutch rod has a lot of "play" in it.

Yeah fish - its just that those instructions don't reference the shim I'm trying to point out. I never would have noticed it if I didn't read the parts fische on Ron Ayers site, and the Kawi zx-12r shop manual. Both of them clearly show a "shim" (looks like a washer) between the needle bearing and the clutch plate. I didn't notice a washer like that when I removed the parts.. so I'm just trying to figure out if I "lost" it somewhere, so I don't mess up my clutch. Sorry I'm slow with this - I just want to do it right. Check out the link to the parts fische and the part number I reference up top - it should show you what I"M talkin about.

You already have the clutch apart? check to see if that washer isnt stuck to the inside of the pressure plate. The shim is just a washer. I'm sure doug could answer this better than I could.. .although he may take offence to the "burn his instructions" part (dont take it the wrong way! ), but infact I had the exact same question and called doug about it when I did my clutch...
I have to go to bed and then back to work... someone take over please!
doug meyer that is.... doug ray is smiling.

Yup, check the inside of your pressure plate. That shim/washer usually sticks to it when you take it apart. That shim doesn't come in the Muzzy clutch kit. You should be able to reuse the one that came with your bike. If you can't find it, make damn sure that you didn't drop it inside your engine. You need this.
I don't know what to tell you. It must be somewhere. I hope for your sake that it's on the floor somewhere.

That "shim" is actually a hardened, ground, bearing surface. Its for the needle bearing to pull against. If you leave that out the needle bearing will be running against the alloy pressure plate which won't last long! When you find it put the best side against the needle bearing - there isn't much to chose between the two sides. I'm just fussy! Keith

as wannabe said, and I said earlier... the shim/ washer, call it whjat you want is there... it was in yer clutch before, so unless you went through the stargate er something it's still there.

I found the little fucker. It was swimming around in the oil pan that I had under the bike to catch and oil that leaked out . I didn't even see it drop in, but I guess it is GOOD that I checked the shop manual before I buttoned up the clutch!! Thanks guys.
