Why does my axle nut work off ?
My rear axle nut came off again while I was riding . What could be causing this ? I used locktight on both nuts, and torqued them to factory specs. Oh yea, its a trac arm without cotter pins.

Umm...Wait a minute? Are you talking about the large castle nut that you are sposed to put the large cotter pin through?

hehe..yea..cuz you didnt put the pin back in?
Hell I only hand tighten mine...that hitchpin keeps it from going anywhere

The axle and nut i got with the arm does not have a hole and pin in it .

hmmmmmm.... I have a trac arm with those same style nuts/no pin. I torque it to 95 ft-lbs and it hasn't loosened yet. No lock tite ever on the rear axle.
are you sure you have that little spacer mounted inside the sprocket carrier??? After torquing the axle, does the wheel spin freely???

Yes, I have all my spacers. Gonna get it pinned.

YCIS: hand tight is all it takes? don't the bearing races and spacers need a certain amount of preload to work correctly? to make sure the inner bearing races are stationary instead of spinning on the axle?
i thought that was why the torque specs were relatively high on these style machines....

wierd that it would loosen after 90-100 ft-lb torque???? Is yr rear tire balanced??? what would cause it to loosen??

Eh...I dont ride the bike much anymore....I suppose "hand tight" was a bit of an over simplification....the nut isnt tight at all....perhaps a 1/4 turn past hand tight.
It really only gets raced these days.

Yea Entropy, I cain't figure it either. I've been wondering about a 6' over anyway, might just get my stk arm extended 6 over and sell that trac arm. This it the second time the nut has come off. I just hate to get rid of the trac cause it has a tank built in.

something is screwy; maybe the threads were cut too loose on the axle or nut???? I would try to find out why (like you are doing) before ditching the trac.
Why not go to "Nutz n' Bolts Are Us" and get a couple of replacement nuts and see if that helps.

Just out of curiosity vince...how on earth did you pass tech at Maxton without that nut safety wired?

Isn't that nut a Nyloc or some sort of steel lock nut??....if it isn't...perhaps it should be.
And entropy is right.....check the threads on the axle....and check the nut size and threads.....I've seen nuts and axles machined to just the wrong tolerances, you tighten the nut to spec. , go ride it come back , look at it and the nut is loose , the nut slid right over the threads.......check it out

the Trac I have is not any kind of a locking nut, BUT the tolerances are very close, pretty close fit. I have not had my axle loosen up at all; it comes off just as hard as I torqued it on.

Guys now I cain't even get the axle out. I beat on it with a rubber mallot and its not moving. Its in there spinning with the wheel.

If axle nut is on the RH side of the bike...that would explain why the nut comes undone and fals off....sounds like maybe you burnt up your wheel bearings.......If and when you get your axle out, make sure that the collar for your sprocket carrier is not missing....if it is...thats your culprit...( incase you dont understand what I'm talking about....inside the aluminum part that your rear sprocket is attached to, there is a pressed in bearing , on the inside diameter of the bearing should be a steel collar that fits snugly but not too tight)
If that collars missing.....It'll cause all kinds of nasty things to happen to your rear wheel.

Yea, the nut is on the right side. Its come off two times. If I can ever get that axle out, I'm gonna get it drilled and pinned.

Be sure and replace all your bearings and seals.....no doubt they are all wasted.
