Here we are...The majority of us 12 owners running 100% synthetic oil, changing the oil and filter before the scheduled time... I myself change the filter and replace with the OEM filter and 2800ml. of Mobile1 mx4t 10-40 oil every 1000 miles!!!

Here's Harry, a man that takes very good care of his 12 and this happens!!! Definately a faulty motor...I sure hope KAWASAKI makes good!!!

According to Doug Meyer, there never was a problem with the ZX11 motors. The problem was the oil level getting low in the motor. I suspect that may be the same problem here or maybe not. The 12 has a very deep sump, so I cant imagine it being *characteristic* with the ZX11. Im curious as to the final verdict on it though. Its kinda scarey being at the mercy of a dealer in that situation. Maybe Kawi will give you an allowance and you can sent to it Muzzy's for a rebuild.

quote:
.....That bearing shit is a Kawasaki trait!!! Then KMC will blame you because it doesnt happen too often!!! Fuck Them Harry, you make sure to point out to them this...

WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN TO SOME 12s AND HAPPEN TO ALOT OF 11s... AS YOU NEVER MADE A FIX FOR IT???!!!!!!!!

2nd stock motor 12,that I have known to blow

The other was a local guy, approx 10k miles and very few drag races. He took it to dealer because of a knock.
Kawi handled it under the warranty, but it was only about 9 months old. Good luck!

Hey Steve...Then why is it a known fact that the ZX11s had a problem with the #4 rods and bearings...Some had other rods and bearings... Why is there an after market fix for the ZX11 oil pan??? Kind of like the ZX12 crappy clutch!!!

All I'm saying is we all have to worry about the oil problem again!!! Why couldnt KAWASAKI address the problem so that the ZX12s will not have the problem that the 11s had...

But, hey what do I know??? I'm just a retired guy that knows Jack Shit...

i'd be interested to know what the warranty provider says.... I got the 3 year plan, in the small print,
it says it will be up to them to decide if it is "warranty-able" I hope for your benefit, there is no AAA type bullshit.

A drag racing acquaintance of mine recently scattered his zx12. I believe it shot part of the #4 conncecting rod through the front of the block. The same guy blew up 2 stock clutch baskets. I don't know any more details but last time his clutch exploded, it left a small hole in the bottom case.

At least you shut yours off before it really did some damage. Good luck on the warranty work. You oughta come out okay.

Westech & oiling white paper

quote:
Ive got a crazy question.... does anyone on this board think that doing long wheelies on a 12R would cause an oil starvation type problem? ... just trying to learn more about these bikes.

Check out this website link for great info on oil starvation issues:

http://westech.home.mindspring.com/whitepgs/oil.htm

Harry, sorry to hear about your engine problem dude. Glad you got the entended warranty.

I've "heard" prolonged wheelies w/low oil level will destroy bottom end bearings if the pickup gets a MINOR short gulp of air.

Doug/Muzzys also has info on this issue, as well as a dry sump pan for ZX11's & ZRX's. I don't think they have same available (yet) for the ZX12 engine? Doug?

I talked to both Westech & Doug @ Muzzys about these issues, & I think Doug has some great info. It was very nice of both to take the time to talk to me about this. Call them or look on the websites for more info...

Harry, let me be the first to say congratulations!!!

Don't think of this as a blown motor, this of this as an opportunity to build a big bore or stroker! Woo hoo! Be excited man!!

This is where the men are seperated from the boys. Call Muzzys and get the ball rolling dude!

what an anus...

A riding buddy bought a $17K HD, took almost a year to get it, & it blew up within two weeks & 300 miles. Now it's gonna take them MONTHS to take care of it under warranty. What a pile of crap those bikes are...

Well , I took it to the dealer today

He said it should be covered , BUT ,then he asked me to sign a w/o for up to $150 then he says $200 then when he fills out the form he puts $200-$250.I said to him you said 150then $200 ,what happened to that? He starts saying the mechanic might need extra time.I asked him what their labor rate was and was informed $60 per hour.I told him $ 200 would give him over 3 hours and that should be enough.I already have both side panels off the bike. Why do I get the feeling they may try and fuck me? They've seen my good side.I hope I don't have to demonstrate my ugly side. They don't want this 280lb raging bull in their china shop.
I had an appt for tomorrow to get my fuel tank fixed. He said it may be jan 2 before they even look at it as they will be closed after christmas until new years.
Does anybody know how much time kawasaki allows their mechanics to pull and engine and tear it apart?

Tearin' your motor apart

Hey Harry - sorry to hear about your motor. I can also feel your pain at pushing a 550 lb bike 2 1/4 miles. I once pushed my RD350 for 4 miles each way to a welders' 'cos I was in school back then and simply could not afford the 50 bucks for a truck rental.

Re. the labor for tearing your motor, if it's under warranty I don't see why you have to pay. Last fall my (almost) new 00 12R had oil seeping out of it's brand new cases. Turned out I had 'porous' cases. The dealer took it all apart and had new cases put in (not that I was real thrilled about it because I'd asked for a new friggin' motor but Kawasaki refused). I wasn't charged a dime. But I vaguely remember that it was about 8-10 hours or so. I might be wrong - it's been awhile.

just curious, you dont go for the xtra 2 hp by running less oil then recomended? my guess would be no.if it turns out to be oil starvtion from extended high RPM Im going to put another 1/2 qt in. My wheelies are getting thru 3rd now so I need to know if that could be a problem also. morroso makes an accumulator that holds an extra Qt I may just plumb in one for insurance. it can also be used as a preluber so you never turn your bike over with out oil pressure. that sucks at least its winter

Hhhhhmmmm....

After reading this I'm wondering if all the wheelie riding I do will hurt my bike. I put the required amount of oil in when I do an oil and filter change. 2800ml I think. It usually puts the oil level just below the center of the sight glass. I was hoping that there WOULD NOT be an oiling issue with the 12. EVERYBODY knows there was one with the 11. But either way I will continue to wheelie the 12, and if she lets go Kaw can fix it.
