"No 200 MPH"! Problems and My Stupidity! My Best Speed was 199.353 MPH The Stupidity was I did not want to go "200 MPH", I wanted to go "OVER" 200 mph! I should have built the bike to go 210 MPH and then I would have ended up with 209, 205 and been happy! My stupidity!
Problems
#1, Before we got there, you already know that I tried NOS Foggers as opposed to N.E. Foggers. To make them work with NE Jets, I had to change the fittings and one has a little tube that makes the spray go directly where it is supposed to! WHen removed, the Spray pressurizes the fuel system and no gasoline can enter the nozzle!
(The cure is to either go back to the NE foggers or drill out the place for the Jet a to fit the NE Jet)
In reality, this turned my wet system into a dry system!
#2, I had a new front tire, so 1 pass wasted to see if the tire was OK
#3, The above problem with the fuel system got worse because it was putting pressure on the fuel pump and sending pressure to the tank! I finally fixed it by using "Epoxy" Glue and glued 4 #18 jets to stop the back pressure!
#4, On my third run, the Piece "0" trash kill switch I had (Spent big money from who LP) the button Stem break off! SO now, there was no way to active the NOS when I wanted to! SO I bypassed the button and just had the Micro switch! The problem here was "Everytime I went to 100% throttle, I had 240 HP! 1st gear, 2nd gear, 3rd gear All of the gears"! imagine trying to ride you bike as fast as you can but can only use 99% throttle? I must have spun the tire in every gear at one time or another from this problem!
#5, I promised Randall that he would ride the bike Sunday! Sunday it rained and it took a few hours for the track to dry! They close at 2 PM, but really at 1:30 PM they stop letting people go to the start line! I got 2 passes Sunday (ran out of NOS once and tried something different once) I ran 184 without NOS and 195 with NOS! Randall did get his license, running 181 MPH on his 3rd pass with a bike geared for 205 and running 11-1 AF Ratio
What is next?? Fix the current problems and make them work correctly and put in Forged Pistons and change valve springs to ones with 30 pounds seat presure and set it up for 300 HP and 210 runs. I am tired and going to bed! On the way through Rock Creek Park,(2 to 3 miles from home) I hit a huge body of water! It sounds like it knocked the muffler off or broke it! More Later!
Thanks to Bergie, he was there and if not for his tent, I would have drowned while working on my bike and having his NOS Knowledge which is a lot more than mine is!
A Special thanks to Dan (Oldkawboy) his sons really Kicked and broke a lot of records running just under 210 on "Gasoline" only! For the trick part and their advice and support with the officials! Linda (His wife) set me straight on a few things and I will not be crossing her path wrong anmytime in the near future! SHe looks sweet and innocent, just do not attempt to hand her trash and tell her it roses ____________

Vincent,
Look on the bright side, you had good shakedown passes, learned ALOT and no one got hurt!!! You have winter to fix the gremlins and i am sure you will exceed 210 next time.
We did the Texas mile on Sat and were "hampered a bit" by a hard quartering head/side wind. Even JohnnyCheese's turbo Busa "only" hit 210; a couple of mojo nitrous Busas barely broke 200. My bike only registered 194. I have a leaking headgasket to explain the "low" speed, but basically there is nothing easy about running the mile. If its not one thing its another.
We are rooting for you Vincent; keep the detailed reports coming!!!!!

Thanks ent! You know I wanted this for my Birthday. My plan was take a year and learn and then go 200! The plan should have been "Take a year and learn and then go over 200"! In reality I did not take a year to learn, my first pass ever was September last year and my last pass in learning was May this year. You would have thought I would have learned to shoot higher?
I am glad you got an opportunity to really stretch it out! Yours is better than mine (Conditions of the course)!!

Vince a wise man once told me something, "Well that is racing" and just like you feel towards me saying that to you. I really wanted to punch the guy(sorry Doug!) but I took his wise words and took a deep breath and jumped back in!!! You will go 200+! and you have learned a valuable lesson, carry an extra switch! but I do have to tell you 199!!! Dude that is freaking fast!! Congrats and I hope to make it to one of your races next year!!!!

that is damn awesome Vince! Congrats on the 199 & change; faster than I ever gone. Some of us dream about it but never get the chance; some of us actually get out to do it! You are one determined old fart & I'm quite proud of you!
Someday maybe if I'm lucky I'll get to give mine a speed run too...

If NO2 is required to do 199, then how did Doug do it with just a pipe?! He did 193?! with OEM exhaust.............I am confused?!?!

Doug, first off has more hours logged at high speed then everyone on this board put together, He is smaller then Vince, and I am sure the weather conditions were much better. and I believe if I read it right, Doug actually had slightly longer of a run then the 1 mile, by just a hair.

MM, is partially right Doug is a "LOT" smaller than I am. I make Mad Mike look small The weather conditions were bad the day Doug ran 199, in my opinion worse than mine (Hotter at least), but that is where the comparison ends.
I am at "Official" ECTA Meets! That means exactly 1 mile from a "Dead" Stop! This is not only top speed, but an acceleration contest! when I entered the timing lights, I was doing 195 plus! 132 feet later, I was doing 199 plus! If the final mark was 20 feet farther away, I would have had a top speed over 200. The problem is, I need to "Average" over 200 MPH
Now the differences in Doug's run!
#1, they were not there for acceleration, but Top Speed
#2, it was not an officially sanctioned ECTA Run
#3, it was longer than the mile I ran! He started on the side runway, made a left turn going as fast as he could (Maybe 30 to 40 MPH when me made the turn) and then acceleratedas hard as he could and most likely was going 70 or 80 MPH when he crossed the line I start from. Plus, the finish line was half way to the first turn out which is slightly down hill (AT least it looks like it is). So his run was closer to 1.5 miles.
Still, this was no easy feat, but this is what he did to make his run. Doing the same thing, I would have gone about 205 with the grearing I had on the bike and over 210 with the HP I had and taller gears.
Now "RA12R" can you understand the difference?

Yes, I did. 205.471 with a 1340.
Vincent has all the details right about our time at Maxton. But don't let the "Not an officially sanctioned run" statement mislead. The speeds were officially timed and certified by Jack Dolan with certified clocks. The distance was about 1.1 miles. Trap distance was only 66 feet. Speeds were 192.307 and 199.115 with a stock pipe and a Muzzy respectively.
Nice Job Vincent. I know EXACTLY how you feel. Let me rub it in further. If you could have reached out in front of the bike about an arm's length and tripped the lights that much sooner, you'd have had a 200. Ouch. I spent three years sitting on a 199.444 with the 11.Doug

Doug, 100% correct. If anything, your run could have been "More" Carefully timed than ours. The "Official" I was referring to was ECTA Event TIme and distance ONLY!
As for sitting at 199.444 for "THREE YEARS" They would have locked me away and thrown away the key, with feeding me through a small slot in the door by then Never knew you struggled so hard and that was a "REAL" piece of equipment that ZX11 the Bike magazine threw away for you!
ZRX Dean, Yes Doug went over 200 by a good margin at Bonneville. It again was different becausethe course and conditions are different. It is Hotter, @ 5,000 feet, and lower traction on Salt, but 3 to 5 miles long and timed over any "ENTIRE" 1 mile stretch going and coming
Second, the Bike was also different, it was built to the rules, about 1340 CC and everything they could do to it including an oxygen sensor hooked up to the Muzzys ECU. SO here they had a lot better bike, a lot more room, but the hardest conditions known to man to do it. I think Doug said his "Wheel" Speed was over 215 when he ran 207. Imagine running on salt with ruts while the rear tire is spinning making as few moves as possible?? Intestestical fortitude I call it! I would need my bike to do it because there is no gastank where my balls are and I would need that space for them to do that!
Last, this reminds me of the first time I went to Maxton for my first land speed race in September 2002! I ran 174+ but missed my class "B" License because I did not go 175+ until "The Next Time"! My plan (Depending on "MONEY") is to clean up the problems and do more tests to get what I have correct and with more money get some proper pistons and valve springs so there will not be the words "NEXT Time" I also want Randall to run over 200 on the bike also! (Just "ME" First!)

Also note that 199 is Vincent's exit speed not the "official" speed, I think the official trapspeed was in the 197 range. I only bring this up because official trapspeed (average) is what is used for the recordbooks.

Small correction, Vincent. My Bonneville bike in 2001 had a power commander not a Muzzys management system. I did have an LED O2 sensor that I used to monitor the A/F during a run to avoid damage.
Doug
posted October 28, 2003 07:44 AM
Doug, that makes what you did an even a bigger feat because I saw the O2 sensor and thought that you had a new trick experimental ECU that Muzzy was working on which would help to control the fuel and timing as in a "Closed Loop system"
Correct on the 199.353 was my "Top / Best" Speed, but not the Speed Average in the trap (197.303). I entered the trap at 195.295 and in the 132 feet gained "4" mph. I just ran out of room. Like I mentioned in one of my post, that if the last trap had been 20 feet farther down, I would have had a top speed of over 200 MPH.
Next time I want to enter the trap at over 202 and leave it at over 205!

OK. This board just ROCKS! Where else can you hear the "war stories" from Doug and share the joy/pain with Vincent. Keep going Vince - I know you'll get it next time - and for serious lurkers like me, it is EXCELLENT learning material! THANK YOU!!!

It helps to keep me "Humble" . I keep going to what my Dad always said "Experience is ALWAYS Something you get IMMEDIATELY after you need it" I am getting a PHD in Experience! Last, how does anyone learn if no one tells on themselves. There is a reason I am good at fixing problems, "I have made so many of them for myself"!
When I raced Professionally, everyone had "SECRETS" I hated that! There were a few that gave me some "SECRETS" Which allowed me to go fast. I made a promise that I was not going to be somebody I hated in the past! Nothing I am doing is that great, but at least it is cheaper to do than most and you will immediately know the results.
I have resolved most of the problems and will post the cures as soon as I test them out which should make some things interesting very soon!!
