Latest project done...Pictures

Last Saturday I built this table and chair for Alli out of Cypress, there is one more chair but not assembled yet. Kids love things their own size and this is no exception.

No deathpulse, I just build for me, my family and friends. I don't charge anyone money for anything I do. I have built things for family and friends that I refuse to take money for, even the cost of wood and materials. I just enjoy building them.

Jon I go to a family owned Mill in Highland Michigan for al the lumber. I don't buy any wood from HD, maybe some plywood if I need it. I don't buy wood that's precut only roughsawn lumber. No I didn't use the new nail guns on this project, I built thie table and chiars on Saturday when my wife was out shopping with her sister, shopping for my present. There is no hardware in these pieces excpet for the clips that retain the table top and the chair seat, you can't permanently fasten things like that cause of the expansion and contraction of the wood, you have to allow the top to "move". That's one of the challenging things about building furniture, figuring out how the moisture content of the wood will effect the stability of the piece. Thanks guys.

If you don't have a Planer and a Jointer, a mill will not be the best place for you to buy lumber. You'll want s4s and the cheapest place to buy that will be Home Depot or Lowes. What kind of wood are you going to use? Is it going to be painted or stained?

Chris... It will have to be stained with something non toxic.. I want to use cherry wood or some nice looking oak.. (kinda like your rails) Here is a pict of a Beardie... I have to do more reading up on them because I am going to have to incorporate heat lamps, basking areas ect.... And Ill have to build a base LOL

Crotchrocket, teh other chair is done now, when I took those pics it wasn't assembled yet.

Tony, you won't find Cherry at HD or Lowes, you really will have to go to a mill or lumber yard. Cherry is not cheap by any standards. I think going rate now is around $4.95 a bd/ft. The king size bed I made out of cherry cost me around $900 in wood. If you go the Oak route than you can purchase it at HD or Lowes, but it's not real cheap there either. You're best bet may be to get your plans for everything you need in order, figure out how much wood you need and I'll go with you out to Armstrong and we can get Red Oak for around $3.65 a bd/ft, then we can run them through my planer and make sure you have straight edges on all the pieces. Do you have any woodworking tools at all? If not, you may want to consider just buying a fish tank stand to save you time and money. I said in my post above that this looks simple enough but that's coming from me who has built many things and has thousands of dollars of tools. Let me know what you decide to do, or if you need a hand.

Oh, and the stair rails you speak of are made out of Red Oak, this first picture is natural before staining. You can keep it rather light like this with just a coat or two of Danish Oil then several coats of Poly or you can stain it to a number of different shades.

This pic here is the after staining, I used the Colonial Stain.

The table and chairs up top are stained the color of Natural Oak.
