Project Wannabe pit vehicle

I don't remember who posted the original thread here for the barstool racer, but it simmered in the back of my head for months. It all finally came bubbling up to the surface this week when I got a wild hair up my ass and bought a 5HP Tecumseh motor and some go cart parts.

I made the mistake of selling my pit bike about 6 months ago, and I've been regretting it ever since. So, now I'm making up for it.

I've got all the necessary parts, but the barstool isn't coming in until Friday. I decided to design it then build it instead of kloodging it for a change. Here's what I have so far:

What do you guys think? This thing is gonna be pimp when I'm done with it.

I'm still trying to work out the steering column. I haven't decided whether I want handle bars or a steering wheel.

The plan is to eventually design a matching trailer that will carry my cooler full of 'refreshments.'

Looks like you need to set up a pitman arm and use some kind of steering box. Not enough room for rack and pinion.

Mike, you got it, man.

SWFT, what's a pitman arm? My plan was to set up my steering assembly something like this:

I've actually been taking ideas from about 20 different barstool racers that I have found in the 'net. Since I totally suck with cutting angles on steel, I decided to just design 90-degree corners on everything.

Plus, I decided to used square stock instead of round tubing because it would be much easier to mate up the cut surfaces.

For example, this frame above would have been a real pain for my 'haven't welded anything in years' butt. But, I do like this because you can tell by the cushion on the barstool that the rider is definitely a member of TFA.

Also, I'm debating between wheelie bars or a trailer. The wheelie bars are cool (and would keep my fat butt from looping the stool), but the idea of pulling a trailer with a cooler full of 'refreshments' sounds cool too.

Sorry about not resizing it, but this is what one would look like with wheelie bars:

This is what the cooler/trailer could look like:

OK, Mike. After I'm done, I'll send you a set of plans. But, wait until I'm done. You may not like the finished product once I get it done.

OK, I just got my barstool. I made the measurements, and it looks like my frame is going to work out. Now, I just need to get a hold of about 12 feet of 1" (0.030" wall) square stock and then I can start building.

Oh! Sorry, a pitman arm is what comes off a drag link. The drag link goes to the tie rods. Got it?

Just close your eyes. Picture the steering column going down to the steering box. Then the pittman arm coming off the box. That connects to a drag link, which is then connected to the center link, which connects the tie rod ends. The tie rods are in turn connected to the axle hubs.

OK, Kids. I'm almost done with this thing. Unfortunately, it's looking like I won't be done before I leave for the race in Vegas this week.

But, it's nice to see it coming along. Here's what I have left to do:

1. Steering - Handle bars & steering mechanism
2. Mount the barstool to the frame.
3. Brake cable
4. Throttle assembly and cable
5. Chain & sprocket.
6. Put oil & gas in the motor and fire it up.

I gotta say that this project was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be, but I have definitely learned a lot in the process.

Here's a pic of the project in progress...ugly-ass welds and all.

OK If You want to make Your own "vehicle" first thing You need is motor. Here are couple of pics of my friends own ATV. The frame and exhaust is home made and the engine is Honda 550 four 16 valves air cooled. Makes something like 60-70hp. Haven't done nothing to this vehicle but "loaned" some parts like old ZX11 chain and sprockets and have synced the carbs & some other minor things. And done couple of test rides. And that motor is insane. You have all the power You need and six speeds!!! It loosees the rear even on 4th and is really nice to ride in wide rearwheel slide!!!

In the pictures it is still in "testing" phase and has after that been painted and have some minor mods done. The bigest problem is that it dosen't have front brakes. But it is in design phase - but maybe in distant future...

The only way to get the skill is to dive in and try to build one. I had no experience or knowledge prior to building this one. I just bugged the crap out of the guys at the go-kart shop until I knew everything I needed to know.

Yeah, I figured that it was no use fully defining something that I was only going to kloodge together anyway.
