BMC race VS K&N's

I currently have K&N's... Would it be worth my time and money to swap to BMC race filters????

Thanxxxxxx

Anyone ever test the two against each other???

I've never heard a single good comment on K&N's, for a ZX12. When I looked into getting one, they stated they did not offer them for the '03. I assumed because of all the bad press, they simply discontined them. Bad fit, impossible to get back out, too much debris passes through, etc.

So I researched options and BMC was the only, and best recommended choice. Two options; Race or Street. I use the Race for better flow. I don't have my dyno sheets in from of me, but I posted the results of some tests back in late July. It added (in conjunction with other mods) about 1 hp and 2 lb tq.

Got them from Yoshimura. They stock both styles.

Ah... the people complaining about the K&Ns were having "user" problems.
And the filter will fit ANY year ZX12. Its not like the 2000s are different from the 2003 in that area.

Many didnt understand that the airfilter slots need ALOT of grease to install the filters. The neoprene like frame was not the best engineered filter... but it works fine. Ive installed and removed over 15 of them.
The BMCs have a nice solid frame... but are they worth double the cost of a K&N? NO.

Ok, so when they're "stuck" what's the best way to get them out without destroying them?

EBD... slide a straight screwdriver down each side to break the "seal".
Pull up on the tab and keep the screw drivers on each side. Once the filter is about 1/4 out you can remove the screw drivers.
If the filter gets stuck.. you can remove the airbox inspection cover and push from the bottom end.

I got them for my 03.
the price was my issue $60 for a pair of k&n or $140+ for the bmc.

Cool. I did not think there was any difference from a fitment issue either. But as I stated, "When I looked into getting one, they stated they did not offer them for the '03." When you hear that directly from the manufacture, you tend to believe them & look elsewhere. As far as price, I think you get what you pay for. When it comes to an air filter on a ram-air style bike like the 12, a ton of debris can potentially get in. So it's not something I personally am going to scrimp on. BMC seems to be a "get what you pay for" product.

What's the difference between the "street" and "race" filters besides the amount of air flow through it? Will the "race" filter allow more dirt to go through?

Definetly possible. From what I can determine, the "Race" style has a thinner mesh/material to allow more airflow. I've not tested the "Street" version on the dyno, so I can't tell you what the power difference is. I do know the Race version added only a slight power increase. So I'd guess the more restrictive "street" version would be negliable when compared to stock.

Here's my post from July. As you can see, the BMC's did make more power.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BMC's & all Dyno runs completed!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Completed all testing. I re-ran all tests today. Man, I'm exhausted! It's hot and nasty in SoCal today. No bullshit, same day within 6 hours, it is what it is, and I'm really happy with all the results. For a "stocker", she's a runner!
As tested on '03 model, 5187 miles, broken in by the book. DJ150, SAE corrected, # 3 smoothing, EGA sniffer inserted. More comments below.

Box Stock - 159.4 hp, 91.1 tq
Muzzy/Jardine, PC3 disconnected, - 167.0 hp, 91.8 tq
Muz/Jar,PC3 connected, Muzzy map, - 167.9 hp, 94.3 tq
Muz/Jar,PC3/MuzMap, VP Ultimate4 fuel - 171.4 hp, 94.8 tq
Muz/Jar,PC3/MuzMap, VP MR9 fuel - 175.3 hp, 95.7 tq
All same plus BMC Race Filters - 176.4 hp, 97.7 tq

The fuel curves were all really close, varying in the 12.8 to 13.5 area. The last test with the BMC Race Filters proves they do indeed make power, but the torque is what surprised me more. But it's nowhere near the 3 - 5 hp that people claim. Unless perhaps it would be more effective when combined with internal mods. Maybe the fuel curve could be leaned out a little to add more power, but overall, it looked good.

For those questioning the purchase of a PC3. The test results above show minor improvement,more-so on the torque, but the fuel graph was superior. It is much more consistent and smooth with the PC3 & Muzzy Map. And of course you have the ability to modify/adjust it to your heart's content. Especially good (actually a must) when you start to do motor mods.
Bike runs great and I'm very satisfied with all the results. Hope this helps some of those who may be holding back on the mods. Big thanx to Doug Meyer for the tech assistance. The parts he supplied; exhaust, PC3, Map, Fans, Reed Block offs, and Steering Dampner kit, were awesome and I'm completely happy. Highly recommended! The only thing left that I'd like to do, is see what the numbers would be on a DJ250. Is there a standard correlation? It appears everyone is getting bigger numbers on a DJ250. Let the questions/comments begin! Better yet, screw anymore dyno testing. I'm going ridin!!!

Josh... the stock filters will leak and let sand by. K&N or BMC are far more superior for filtering debris. My airbox (past the filters) was spotless. The K&Ns were trashed and the grease around the frame did its job of blocking the dirt/sand. Cleaned out the grease and added a new batch.

Here is a picture of the 3 filters
3 types of filters

K&N and BMC installed (BMC = red)

A foil tape seal installed after the filters
