I thought about getting one of those, bought a "real" boat instead. Now I want both. Hope Santa likes me.

Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A., is unveiling what will certainly become the most in-demand personal watercraft in the industry as it introduces the JET SKI® STX-15F, a high-performance luxury model that takes its place as the flagship of the JET SKI line.

Powered by a new 1,498cc four-stroke engine, the three-passenger STX-15F is Kawasaki's highest-performing four-stroke personal watercraft and offers precise handling and awe-inspiring acceleration.

"The JET SKI STX-15F is the quickest-accelerating four-stroke Kawasaki watercraft ever," said Steve Fischer, product manager for personal watercraft at Kawasaki. "To say that it raises the bar for the industry is an understatement.

"For all-out performance and handling, as well as comfort and convenience, it's a step up for serious enthusiasts and families who want the highest quality three-passenger watercraft available."

In addition to its high-output four-stroke engine, the STX-15F catapults ahead of the competition with a hull design that benefits from Kawasaki's 30-plus years of building personal watercraft. Its well-thought-out dimensions provide spacious "sport-oriented" rider accommodations, as well as less drag for better efficiency and excellent fuel economy.

The legendary NINJA® ZX-12R motorcycle engine provided the starting point for this new high-performance JET SKI model. While the bore is the same as that of the smaller JET SKI STX-12F, the stroke is 13.8mm longer, increasing displacement to 1,498cc. This long stroke design delivers a flat torque curve for a smooth spread of power across the entire rpm range to create 160 horsepower. Dual overhead cams, four valves per cylinder, fuel injection and electronic engine control, which harmonizes the fuel and ignition systems, provide maximum performance and reliability.

The fuel injection system utilizes four injectors and a large 60mm throttle body to deliver a quick response exceeding that of the fastest four-stroke watercraft on the market. The intake manifold is also revised, and the intake and exhaust valves feature new lift and timing settings.

Even with such high-performance attributes, the STX-15F has earned a Three-Star Ultra-Low Emissions rating, meeting the Environmental Protection Agency's strictest standards, and the California Air Resources Board standards for 2008.

The four-stroke engine is rubber-mounted in the hull and includes a water-jacketed, performance-tuned exhaust system, dual mufflers and large-capacity airbox.

The STX-15F utilizes a direct drive axial-flow jet pump connected to an oval-edge, stainless steel, three-blade impeller and an 82mm jet pump nozzle for powerful acceleration. Equally important, the STX-15F engine produces its peak power at a relatively low rpm while matching the impeller's peak efficiency rpm, thus eliminating the need for a complicated gear reduction unit. The result is improved durability, reduced vibration and noise, and improved fuel economy.

The STX-15F is also equipped with Kawasaki Smart Steering™, which provides turning action even if the throttle is not applied in certain situations. Smart Steering detects the rider's steering input as well as the speed of operation and automatically increases engine speed to provide additional thrust. The advanced steering technology continuously monitors engine rpm to determine if the watercraft is being operated at a low or high speed. If the speed is low, the system does not operate. If the speed is high, the system will operate, when if the throttle has been released and the engine has returned to idle.

Kawasaki Smart Steering can assist riders in learning to negotiate turns and to maneuver, making turning easier and smoother. Experienced riders may not feel the system functioning since they realize throttle application is required during turning.

Assisting with low-speed maneuvering is a reverse bucket that is shaped to deliver optimum thrust for precise direction control when backing, and the bucket is injection molded to eliminate corrosion.

Aggressive turning and high-speed stability are key to enjoying the powerful four-stroke engine, so the STX-15F hull is based on the race-inspired JET SKI 1200 STX-R® model - the same design that carried Kawasaki team racer Dustin Farthing to the 2003 International Jet Sports Boating Association MotoSurf Tour National championship title in the Pro Runabout 1200 class. The one-piece fiberglass hull increases durability while reducing weight, and new injection molded sponsons designed specifically for the STX-15F feature a special "lip" for increased cornering grip and high-speed stability. The hull also features a molded-in Kawasaki Splash Deflector to help minimize spray on the rider.

With its muscular, aggressive look, the STX-15F is lighter and more compact than the competition, yet Kawasaki engineers have created a spacious riding position by raising the handle 38mm and pulling it back an additional 32mm. The new position makes aggressive performance riding easier and suits a wider range of riders, from beginner to expert.

The newly styled hatch cover is constructed from ABS plastic, adding to the fresh, high-quality styling of the STX-15F, and a hydraulic damper holds the hatch cover open, allowing easy access until the rider closes it. The mirrors are also made of ABS plastic and are mounted directly to the deck, adding to the sleek lines.

The open rear deck of the STX-15F features abundant space for getting into water skis or a wakeboard, and reboarding in deep water is simplified with the automatically retracting boarding step located at the rear of the hull. The rear deck can also accommodate a cooler or other items needed for a day on the water. Other features include a water-resistant storage space, an easily accessible glove box and additional storage space located under the seat.

For extended rides, fuel capacity is a generous 16.4 gallons. Other features include a LCD instrument panel so the rider can monitor the fuel level, speed, engine rpm, trip distance and time. Warning lamps alert the rider to low fuel level or high engine temperature, and a magnetic keyed ignition switch helps deter unauthorized operation.

Features

Engine

- Adapted for watercraft use from the legendary NINJA® ZX-12R motorcycle engine

- With 160 horsepower on tap, this large, 1,498cc, four-stroke engine provides incredibly strong low- and mid-range torque

- Intake manifold tract designed for maximum performance

- Digital fuel injection provides great throttle response, smooth engine performance and quick acceleration, as well as easy starting and excellent fuel economy

- Throttle body diameter is 60mm, 6mm larger than the STX-12F

- Dual overhead cams (DOHC) are light and compact for less valve train inertial mass

- Four-valve cylinder head with large valves provide better intake and exhaust flow to improve torque and power

- Intake and exhaust valve lift as well as timing are set to reduce exhaust emissions

- Tip-over protection shuts engine off if craft tilts more than 61°

(Sorry extremelean) but have you seen Bombardier's new RXP Sea-Doo? 215 HP!!
"Step aside. With an unheard of 215 horses of intercooled, supercharged power - yes, we said 215 horses - the industry's mightiest musclecraft yet leaves everything else way behind. It's the new RXP, the most powerful two-seater ever*, and it was born to perform. Radical new hull and deck design Check. Instinctive responsiveness Or course. Turbo-lag Not a chance. And with features like these, this thing is all muscle: analog speedometer and tachometer with 16-function information center; electric trim for enhanced handling with fingertip control; and removable seat cowling. And with an intercooled, supercharged, 215HP four-stroke Rotax engine, you've never seen anything like it. And with all these horses, your time on the water is going to go a lot faster. So is your pulse."

They should go between 65 and 70 MPH. Not impressive numbers for a motorcycle but very fast for a PWC.

There's an old saying that there are three things that help a watercraft go fast:

1. Hull design
2. Hull design
3. Hull design

I used to have an old ZXi-1100 Jet Ski that easily went 60 - 70 mph on the water, but it wasn't the most stable thing in the world at slow speeds. My buddy had a boat of a Jet Ski (3 seater) with the same engine, but this thing wasn't nearly as fast.

As for the engine, I wonder what that engine would put out if you actually tuned it for drag racing. 160 HP seems kind of low for that kind of displacement.
