sidestand, clutch and gear switches
What is the logic behind the sidestand/gear/clutch switches? Mine seems to be all wrong....
On all the other Kwaks I've had, you can start the engine with the bike in gear, stand down, and clutch pulled in. My 12 won't do this.
Likewise it won't even start with the stand UP, bike in gear, and clutch pulled in.
I know it's not normally a huge deal, but when my bike is cold and I pull away and then brake for the first speed hump just outside my driveway, sometimes she dies - I'd like to be able to just pull the clutch and thumb the starter, to avoid looking like a learner rider and having to stop so that I could find neutral easily (damn near impossible to get it while moving).
I know the easy solution is to set it to fast idle for a couple of minutes, but I'm interested to know the reasoning behind the switch configuration.
Is my wiring screwed up? 6000 km on her now, but she's done it since new.
Any ideas?
Cheers,

On the few occasions mine died while leaving a parking lot or driveway all I do is pull in the clutch while rolling and hit the starter. It will also start sidestand down, in gear, clutch in. Sorry not much help but I think you got something wrong.

Mine did the same thing - can you start in neutral with clutch out?
My problem was a clutch switch on the underside of the lever. Replaced that and it's fine.
It would also cut out sometimes for just a half second. Mid corner that was fugly.
Hasn't done it since.

the clutch switch is sensitive to water
so riding in the rain & or washing makes it kinda iffy
wd-40 (water displacement 40)
might help if they arent already crudded up
if you have an electronics store in your area
where you might obtain a tube of dielectric grease
put in in where you can
you might avoid the same problems/scenario
good luck

Or, another option if you want to get rid of all the idiot proofing, cut the two wires that go into the clutch switch and short them together. This bypasses the clutch switch and the kickstand switch. Mine has been bypassed since I installed my 2-step. I haven't had any problems. But, if you do this, you better be darn sure that you pull in your clutch when you start your bike. Also, if you do this, the engine won't die if you try to take of with your kickstand down.
Your choice. How idiot proof do you think your bike needs to be?

Here's pic of the little devil, if this indeed is the problem. Very common on most Kawasaki's. Alot of times you can snap the little plunger a few times and she'll start to work again, but she's on the way out. Can be taken apart and cleaned.

Thanks guys,
Gonna pull the clutch switch to bits tonight, I'll post up what I find. I did notice though that disconnecting the clutch switch results in the engine not starting, but the start-up whine coming on (fuel pump?).
I thought the switch would have been open or closed, but there must be a resistor in there that detects a fault too. Do things have to be this complicated?
I never tried shorting it yet, but I probably will - it's not like I often try to start the bike while in gear, on the sidestand.... Or if I do, I take full responsibility for broken bits 'cos I must be fuckin' stupid.
Cheers!

OK, I have had the clutch switch split now, I thought I'd found it when I saw all the black shit in there, but that's not it either - just some debris from the sliding copper bits.
So here's what's happening:
In gear, sidestand down, clutch in: Nothing
In gear, sidestand down, clutch out: Nothing
In gear, sidestand up, clutch in: Nothing
In gear, sidestand up, clutch out: Nothing
Neutral, sidestand down, clutch in: Whine
Neutral, sidestand down, clutch out: Start
Neutral, sidestand up, clutch in: Whine
Neutral, sidestand up, clutch out: Start
I think that covers all possible combinations?
I thought that my clutch was wired ass-over-tit (sorry, upside down). But that doesn't seem to make sense either....
Is the deal that you should be off the sidestand, in a "neutral state" - i.e. either clutch in or in neutral.
But it should start in gear, with the sidestand in any position, with the clutch in, right?
Shit my brain is fried. At least the fucker starts. Doh!
Any wiring gurus got any ideas here? She's going in for her 5000km service in 2 days time (a bit late.....). Should I call it under warranty?
Cheers,
