Parts Needed,......or WTF do I do????
Been out in the garage tonight gettin' Lil' Red ready for DGVI. Put the new EBC HH pads on as the old ones were shot after 6k miles of abuse. Cleaned the air filters and inspected around the inlet to the throttle bodies for debris, everything looked good.
Then I decide to unplug the wiring harness coming up from the stator as it still seeps a very small amount of oil from time to time. Well, no dice, it ain't coming unplugged. Upon further inspection I can see where the wires on the bottom of the plug that goes to the regulator, (I think) have been pretty hot. Hot enough that they are hard to bend, the insulation is very discolored and has hardened also. Not good..., not good at all.
I didn't opt for the recall fix because I had been into the harness a few times trying to stop the oil leak. I had it to the point where I could live with it. I still could if it were only an very very minor oil leak. Now I have bigger problems.
I know talking to the dealer and getting them to replace the stator will more than likely be a "No go", but if the bike had been right from the factory I'd never had any of these problems. On top of that, even if I were lucky enough to get the stator replaced I'm still looking at buying a regulator. I'm a little bummed because I feel like I'm getting fucked twice because I tried to fix a problem that was rearing it's head WAY before Kawasaki acknowledged it.
I guess I'm just upset because DGVI is upon us, and I've already spent a ton of loot in preparation. I sure as hell don't want to stand on the side of the Cherohala and watch Lil' Red burn to the ground, or even worse have an accident because of it. THIS FUCKING SUCKS!!!!!
For all I know it may run another year like this, may not make it another week. That's the $64 question.
Are the new stator wiring setups revised so that this doesn't happen???
Anyone know what a new regulator cost??? Does anyone have a good used for sale????
I really hate going on a weeklong trip to the gap with this hanging over my head. When I pulled a check on this before the May trip none of the damage was there.
Any advise will be appreciated.

Rick, cut the wires back from where they are hardened, strip the insulation off of 3 butt-splices (or use non -insulated ones), slide some heat shrink over each line, Connect one set of wires at a time , solder the butt splices, and pull heat shrink over the connections.
Ozzy made me do this to mine and it works fine! ( I haven't looked at it s
ince we left for Laguna Seca though )
Forgot to mention.... OMIT THE CONNECTOR!

You could also call Zach at Alcoa Rick and order one so it'll be there when we get there and we could install the new stator. It's a breeze to do. If I recall the price of them were ony $150. Just a thought.

Fuck Fuck Fuck!!!!!!!!!
Dino, I thought about doing just that. My harness has already been "spliced" in one spot, soldered the wires then put shrink tubing over them. It has worked for over a year now with no problems, so I have no doubt that I can eliminate the plug and make it work. But in the end though, I just absolutely hate messing with junk. That's what my stator harness is .......friggin' JUNK.
Otis,
I looked on Ron Ayers website a few minutes ago and got some prices. Voltage Regulator $99, Stator $272. I am very close to at least ordering this stuff and having it for a backup, or just going ahead and installing it before the trip. It all depends on how long it takes Ron Ayers to get it to me. My biggest question is, have the stator harnesses been updated????? I don't want to drop $400 only to have this happen again in a couple years.
Also, if anyone knows the exact details of what they do on the harness recall I'd like to know. That way if I get new parts I may try something similar just to be safe.
Thanks for the input guys, I was really bummed when I saw this last night.

No shit man, I swear when it rains it pours. I just got a call from my buddy at the body shop. My truck is ready, but my wallet is saying NNNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! With all the crap I've got in the works this trip will definitely be my last outing of any type this year. I gotta start putting some loot back for my 10R, OR Gixxer. What I've spent this last couple months would've made a sweet down payment on one.

I could list all the shit that I've gone through the past two weeks but I'd make me depressed all over again. Then if I start to add up the $$$ I'd fookin' go crazy.
Tonight gotta sit down and completely redo my cash flow statement and completely redo my budget. Prolly see what I got to get rid of. 'Fraid it just might be my 12R.
Sompin's gotta give.

Update.......
Parts aren't in stock @ Ron Ayers, but ordered them anyways. They're supposed to be here in 7-10 business days. That's gonna be close to trip time. I just hope it's where I don't have to do a midnight thrashing to get the bike ready.
Another $389.30 I'm out!!!!

Aw, hell. It's not like I'm gonna hit the poor house or anything (That'd be shacking up with Elk).
I have some things to figure out. IF I need to get rid of anything the 12 is on the hit list. But, gotta see. Maybe I can cancel my landline phone ($100/ month for limited use???) and a couple of other things and redo stuff.
Rick, I hear ya, man. All these $300, $400, $500, hits just keep comin.
Otis - yer on. But I'm not drinkin' yer Miller Lite piss water.

Don't tell it.........
Please say it ain't so Otis!!! Miller Lite!!!! OMFG!!!! I thought you was a Bud Man. I know we have drank many o' Budweisers together in the past, never saw you with a can o' Miller Lite. This has to be false information.
I know it is, I know my friends and what they drink.
You drink Budweiser, UNLESS you're at a bar where Killian's Red is on tap. Correct???
That's what I thought.........

You are certainly correct Rick, I only drink Bud unless I'm at a bar then it's Killian Red on Tap. Never, never, never MIller Lite. Jon must be thinking of Bart.

Just diagnosed a beautiful 1999 R1 with a polished frame yesterday with a toasted connector going into the rectifier, called yamaha and they say it is a common problem in that year resulting from the ground wire clip in that particular connector not being as tight as it should be. :/

Use bubble gum wrap. She'll never know.
2) Wedding
Get married in the back yard and give all the guests all the Natural Lite they can handle. Which will one anyway since it tastes like shit. Use a plastic glass to break under your foot. Besides being safer, plastic is probably much cheaper. Or steal one from a restaurant.
3) Honey Moon
pitch a tent in the back yard.
4) SV 650 so I can race next year.
Be sure to buy one already race prepped. Much cheaper. You can find them from $4k-$5k, generally

Jonwright,
I saw your other post on the reason for your "outlay", and I can sympathise - I'm in the same situation, but worse. Don't like to say too much though.
Man, I REALLY hope you get out of this and keep the bike. I know it would break my heart to sell mine, I may have to also though.
Anyway, what I wanted to say was - even if you do sell the bitch, stay on here, I always get a real laugh reading your posts, ya pre-vert.

I can't even relate to what Bartina is sayin'. Does he really feel your pain? Hell, he's got more money tied up in one rear Super Corsa then I got tied up in my whole swingarm set up. There are bennies to being poor and ignorant. I still find great pleasure in the "simple things".
