ZX12R oil light coming on.
I have a 2002 ZX12R with 4000 miles on it that I bought used a few days ago. When I ride over 5,000 rpms for more than a 5 seconds and stop with the engine idleing, the oil light comes on for a few seconds and goes out. It does not come on when riding hard, only at idle after riding fast and it goes out after a few seconds. The oil level is right at the middle of the sight glass with the bike sitting straight up. In a few minutes I'm changing the oil to make sure it has 10w40 and I'm going to test it out with the oil level at the low mark. Could it be hitting the crank and frothing? Any other ideas? Help.
*This is my 4th bike and I've never had this problem before.

It certainly has nothing to do with whether it is 10W-40 or not. I would be concerned for sure. Putting the level at the low mark also won't do anything. If you change the oil and put in a new filter and the problem persists, you need to get it into a shop quick like.

Pull the pan immediately and inspect the pickup before it's too late.

Well, Bergie. Sounds like you've had a bad experience with this.....
Oh, Bergie's been around the block a couple of times. I'd listen to him. Now, Otis on the other hand, doesn't have the common sense to back out of a paper sack.

Yeah eSportbike is pretty cool .
I changed the oil and filter, put the level to the low, middle, and top line and it still does it. It's going in the shop ASAP  , thanx for the replies.

Hey RAC, you mentioned the pick-up, could it be clogged, bent, kinked, or what should I look for? Should I try replacing it? I've rebuilt a few Chevy smallblocks when I was in high school, never a bike motor(yet) and have good mechanical skills(a little rusty) and something like an oil pan would be no big deal, but I don't have the money or time to do a tear down.

look for goo/fiber-ish looking stuff on the pickup screen. bad goo...

Could it be an oil pressure relief valve or spring?

Pull the pan and clean your pickup now do not ride it again untill you figure out what is up!!! or you will be replacing bearings at least and the whole motor at worst case! is could be the relief valve, but that is an easy looksee when you get the pan off. I like bergie believe your pickup is clogged!

Before you go and have the thing torn down.....double check the wiring to the oil pressure switch and perhaps the switch itself.....Not to say that there is not some other problem....just check the simple things first.

Sounds to me like a wadded clutch clogging the pick up,when the rpm's come up the shit gets pulled into the screen,you let off the gas...light comes on because it takes a few seconds for the pump to run out of oil...I had a clogged screen in my 383 road runner years ago...40lbs of oil pressure at idle,when you rev the motor up...5 lbs...Get that pan off ASAP!

I had the same symptom for several thousand miles....First it started as kinda infrequent, then it progressively showed up more often after hard running, then it got to the place that during hot idle the light would flicker if it was loping at around 900 rpm. But slightly raising the rpms would stop it. I was being angry so i just keep watching my oil level and changing the oil. It wasn't until i saw my mph drop 8mph at the track in 3 passes did i quit. Main bearings were toast and #3 was completely closed. But, when ideling cold the light would NEVER come on. If it is not the oil pressure sending unit, you need bearings. If your screen was clogged, you need bearings. The problem is that the clearances are soooooo tight and they use the single hole flat bearing oiling method, that you have no room for ANY LOSS of oil or the bearing gets touched!
Good luck, hopefully you can just get your crank polished like i did and everything work out!!! PS have you seen any copper in your oil yet? I only saw copper once,,,,,,,,and that was before I rode all those miles after the first oil change of my tranny rebuild.

It's in the shop, as long as it's under warrenty I'll try that first but it does not look good.

changing the oil doesn't mean anything, I've drained clean oil and found massive amounts of bearing material in the pan when it was pulled yet nothing in the oil, also if the pickup is clogged with material it doesn't mean it will drain out when you change the oil. If the light is coming on, you have a problem, trust me. If you get to it soon enough you may be able to clean or replace just the pickup and flush it out with clean oil and be okay. It takes 30 minutes to pull the pan and the pickup, cheap insurance. If I'm wrong, I'm happy for you!

The dealership I bought it from gave me a 50/50 warranty, it's there problem until I get the bill for half the cost. It's outta my hands for now.
