How to wheelie?

I can do power wheelies for a block or so, but how do you keep the front end up? Im talking real long wheelies. I guess it's a balance thing, but I need to know the secret. Please type a full explanation. Harry? Anyone else?

you gotta get it up in 2nd. that way it comes up nice and slow,,,,, then it is a balancing act with the throttle

Wheelies

Some of my friends do a lot better wheelies than I do and I do not consider myself that good.I used to be a lot better in that I was much more willing to take chances.I'm older and don't heal up that fast anymore.
It does have to do with balance and finding the balance point of your bike.Once you reach that balance point stay on it by using the throttle. If you let it come down from the balance point you have to apply more throttle to keep the front wheel in the air and your wheelies won't be as long (in distance) By all means be careful as I've almost flipped mine lots of times. That back brake can be your friend but if you hit it hard be prepared for the front end to slam down. Before you set the front end back down make sure the wheel is straight.I have heard of people getting into tank slappers when the front end comes down.Mine twitches sometimes but I've got a hold on the bars pretty good. I want/need a scotts dampner.
You can also change gears while the front end is up to extend the length of your wheelies. I can do this and have several times but generally don't as I can do fairly long ones without changing gears.
Riding dirt bikes is where I learned to wheelie.i could get my front end up in first , keep it up , and shift all the way through 6th gear on a Suzuki RM-125 I had at one time.

Or ........ second gear shut off the throttle about 7-8000 revs so that it loads the front end and then open up almost straight away, then ride her to the limiter. Doesn't look as sweet as dipping the clutch but it works.

I am not even close to a pro when it comes to wheelies but I can hold my own...I notice the more I do em the more comfortable they are. First gear is tricky to keep the speed down but every so often I can ride em out for a ways in first. 2nd gear is where all the fun comes in....and 3rd...even better! I always know right after take off if it will be a bad, good or GREAT one..all depends on how smooth it comes up for me, you can just feel the balance point...it just feels like time is standing still when you find it! I got most of my practice on three wheelers, four wheelers and dirt bikes so that helped a lot but you still need some time to get used to a different ride! Just my two cents worth. Next summer I am going for the stand up wheelies...that's when I will be able to pull off the long ones!

I beleive the balance point is just beyond 45 degrees. It's up there and it's not comfortable at first but something you get used to. I agree with BigZX12R that the second gear lofties are the best. It comes up much smoother and isn't quite as scary (aside from being on one wheel at 80 mph). First gear is a little intimidating, it's easy to get the wheel up but it comes up VERY fast and that can make wheelies a little uncomfortable. DO NOT FORGET TO COVER THE REAR BRAKE, smashed balls are better than a 500+ lb bike on top of you! good luck, practice lots

My bike is a bitch to try and control in first gear. Second gear is much better. I can get some pretty good wheelies powering it up in second. I have been working on shifting into third and I can do it a little. I used to be fairly decent on my ZX11 but the 12R is whole different animal..

Heck..just gas on it in first or snatch it up easily when you shift into second. I've ridden quite a few more than a quarter of a mile. Just have to make sure when you get faster as it seems to "dance" side to side. MAKE SURE your front wheel is straight when you come down!! (Lesson learned firsthand) After much practice, you can feel the balance point. You might want to break out your old BMX and practice on it. Same principle, and cheaper. Wear your gear....ALWAYS.

sailusvi,

I weigh 'bout 235. You just have to give the handlebar's a lil' tug and up you go.
