More damage uncovered
I haven't been keeping the website news up to date so I'm sure most of you don't know the current status of my rebuild so I thought I'd shoot a quick update message here. I'll try to update the website this coming weekend I've been slacking and have a lot of material to add.
Anyway as you know after losing power on the dyno I tore down the engine and found some bearings were wearing (#4 rod and #5 outside main) so I sent my +4mm crankshaft out for repair. Nothing too bad the crank looked good. So I sent it back to Doug at Muzzys who by the way has been providing excellent technical support during this process. Thanks Doug!
Muzzys had the crankshaft magnafluxed and it came back with a very minor crack on the #3 main journal.. something that I had missed during visual inspection when used a micrometer on all the journals. It's obvious enough now that they highlighted the damage but hell if we didn't see it before.
So this new bad news really sucks as it has set me back several weeks (missed two superbike showdown events) and bigtime on costs. Now not only do I need a replacement +4mm crankshaft but I also need a replacement CORE crankshaft.
I picked up a 2002 crankshaft with low miles in good condition off ebay for $230 delivered which is a little about half what I could get a brand new crankshaft from my local sponsoring dealership (cost is about $550 + S&H). eBay score! Thankfully Muzzys said no problem on swapping out this 2002 crank as a core for an 00/01 so I will be shipping this core out and they should have it by the end of this week. Core pending, they should ship my replacement crankshaft next week. Hopefully the following weekend I can begin the re-assembly process and maybe get some runs in before the end of the race season.
I can't really complain about the crank considering the amount of good use that I got out of it. A little over a year of beating the snot out of the bike, 8,000+ street miles on a +/- 200 rear-wheel hp bike, well in excess of 700 drag strip runs in the mid 9s to high 8s, about 25 pounds of nitrous, and a couple dozen one-mile land speed racing runs in the 195~204 mph range. If the next one lasts as long, I'll be happy. I'd say it was well worth it.
