He will charge me $4.00 for the first word, and $1.00 each for every word after that.

Right now, just having the text, "In Memory Of My Friend Don Blair" looks like it'd cost about $10 a patch. That's pretty reasonable price for doing a few patches. From what response you've already got, I wouldn't be surprised if the number goes over 25 (that ACTUALLY send their money). If you start adding stuff like dates or "ZHooligan", it starts to run over $15 and any kind of graphics would be out of the question. At least for a reasonable price.
My company does screen printing, but I subcontract out quite a bit of embroidery work to another local shop. In most cases they charge me by the number of stitches involved in the design. They do a lot of work from small/rural police and fire departments. Their quantities are similar to what we are talking about for Z's patch, but far more complex in design (town logos, maltese cross, etc.).
I know that for the upcoming Deal's Gap event, I was going to be designing the event decal in honor and memory of Don. I haven't really come up with any ideas of what it might look like yet, but it might be nice if the patch and event decal had some similarities in their appearance.
I would have to call my guy and see what he could possibly do and how much would a "simple design" patch would cost. I'd also need to talk to him about the quantities, possible smaller reruns and so on. I can not say that I could get something at a reasonable price because I don't have a clue on what it will cost in set-ups and such.
It might not be practical and we'd could be just chasing our tail's on this. I just though it might be worth looking into before you already spend your money on something else. There's just a few things I'm needing to know before I call him. Things like overall size, shape and stuff like that. He might have some blanks in stock that I can score at a fair price, but I won't know until I call.
So, don't cut your ties with your patch guy just yet. I just though you might want to go over the details of what you are wanting via e-mail. Just let me know.
Then again, you might talk to Fish about it too. Now that he's working with a guy on the caps, he might have some ideas as well.

It will be eliptical. The short axis will be two inches; the long one will be four inches.
It's black with text that reads "Remembering My Friend DON Blair". The first 3 letters will be white; while, the name will be red.
I think each will cost $8.00.
The font in size 14.
I have it in PDF format, except the text didn't come out in color when I converted it to PDF.
