NO! NO! NO! Been there, done that! DO NOT use dirtbike packing. It lasts less the 1/4 the time and will likely smell like a cat pissed in your pipe. I'M SERIOUS! I've tried it 3 times. For the price I paid for all that packing, I could have bought TWO Muzzy repacking kits.
I don't know what kind of exhaust you have, but in the case of the Muzzy repacking kits, you not only get the packing, but you also get the metal screen tube that the packing goes around. It all comes in one convenient package wrapped in plastic. You just take off the end cap, remove the old screen and any remaining old packing then you just slide in the new package... plastic and all. The plastic will smoke for a short period of time while it is burning off the packing, but it won't even take a whole "ride" to accomplish that.

Send it back to muzzys..they will repack it for you for just a tad more than it cost for the packing alone.
Well worth it IMO after dealing with the annoyance of repacking it yourself...that shit sucks.

Muzzy's repack is a no brainer. It is a plastic bag full of stuff wrapped around a new core. The kit includes new screws. remove the screws pull out the old core, put the new one in including the plastic bag and then install the new screws.

heh...you obviously dont have a round aluminum canister.
My pack also came with rivets..not screws.
The procedure went like this
1. Drill out rivets in canister to remove ends
2. attempt to stuff packing obviously not designed for the round aluminum canister into opening
3. Curse profusely as you attempt to pound packing into canister with screwdriver while still in package
4. Curse even more when you give up and open package and begin to stuff the crap in by hand
5. Realize that is IS fiberglass (or something similar) unlike what you were told and the shit gets all over everywhere
6. Stuff contents all around bit by bit packing it down with screwdriver
7. polish endcaps
8. Reinstall endcaps with rivets.
Quite frankly..next time ill pay muzzy to do it. I value my time at alot more than 20 bucks or whatever they charge

Muzzy deal is definetly a deal. Other than that, "Silent Sport" is the best stuff. It comes in a bag, it gets "stuffed" into the can, and doesn't itch like "fibreglas". Way easy to use. You can either buy it in volume bulk bag, or in "pillow packs". Pillow packs have the material in a "blanket" and you simply wrap it around the core. Even easier to use than the bulk pack and only slightly more money. Most m/c should carry it.
It doesn't matter if it's for a dirt bike or whatever, as long as it's for a 4 stroke. It's all about the brand and volume. Silent Sport is used on all the factory Superbikes & Supersport mufflers. Can't go wrong.

ycis I can see your point in your case. I have the Ti oval can and it is a very easy deal.

YCIS, The packing sent is exactly what we fill the round mufflers with. If you did not get the "bagged" packing, this must have been some time ago. That is all we use. Fiberglass is a pretty generic term. That is not what the manufacturers call it. That's like calling the hard stuff your bike is made out of "metal"-lot's of different formulations.

Well..the one I got was obviously packed VERY lazily. Just aking it out of the box you could see it was oblong and not round. Almost looked like a stick of cotton candy. I fought for about an hour trying to jam it into the canister but all I succeeded in doing was bunching it up so that none was on one side..and it all was stuffed on the other. I even tried removing the other endcap to see if perhaps I could PULL it through to even it out....no dice.
The only way I could pack it was to remove it from the plastic shroud..and stuff it in by hand (using a long screwdriver to pack it down to the bottom as I made my way up to the top.
Perhaps im in the minority that had this problem...but it did happen
