1 plus 4 year warranty Question
I got the extended 4 and I asked the dealer if i could change my own oil he said yes so I called another kaw dealer and he said sure. But the warranty states it must be done by a dealer ? WTF, should I? what if the motor blows then what. Maby I should get it in writing from the dealer.
See my friend bought a ford excursion and blew the motor and was missing 1 oil change paper and they didn't cover it
8k for a new v10.He got a lawer and big ford has more lawers than you can shake a stick at and they have postponed it 3 times he is fuked.

Whenever you buy your oil/filter, keep the receipts and document mileage at each change. What can they say??
For instance, a GM dealer does not require you to get every oil change at a GM dealer just to cover you "under warranty" for any problems. It is your right to use who you want.... whether it is yourself, Walmart, the Quick Lube down the road, or the dealer in question.
Just cover your maintenance with documented proof. I change mine myself. Of course, mine is not in warranty any more.....
Your friend will win unless they can prove neglect or abuse. "IF" he ever makes it to court, that is. He also has a shitty service manager where he took the Excursion.

Save receipts and document like Chan said. You can acutally copy the maintenance page out of the service manual and use that as a guide.
If you like your dealer...you can pay $12 a filter every time you change the oil to prove maintenence intervals.

On the other hand, if you're anything like me you'll want to change the oil more regularly than the warranty period dictates, then just let your dealer do every second one. My deal was that I only pay for the oil - all the manhours are free. I still HATE the idea of anyone else working on my bike though - it's just never happened before, and at least if I do fuck things up, I know about it. I don't see myself selling this thing - ever - but when the dealer is doing the changes for free, why not ( as long as you can watch).

This is my opinion on "extended warranties" - I have had one (on a car). (Notice I don't live in US though, so this might not be applicable to you).
1) They cover fuck all. (Scottish for nothing)
2) They don't pay for the things they do allude to cover, because they can cite "machine abuse", "race use", or anything outside the owner's manual.
Let's face it, my ZX12 manual says "avoid idling the engine for more than five minutes, otherwise severe engine damage may occur".
So I can't drive in town?
For the same reason I don't buy "extended warranties" on kitchen appliances, computers, furniture.
If it works for a year, then hell there's nothing wrong with it - just look after the babe.

I buy oil filters a dozen at a time, I have reciepts for cases of Motorcycle Oil. Keep paperwork. I go about a 1000 miles per oil change. I'm anal about the oil when the bike turns the RPMS the 12 does.
I bought three oil filters when I bought the bike. I bought a dozen more from Ron Ayers and I have 8000 miles and I have three filters left.
If the Engine goes bang they can tell if the oil was bad. Its easy believe me.
Keep receipts And change your oil according to how you ride.

Just did 1 today filter and oil 500miles, air filters also.Taking it up to 6k in the morning.

When it comes to extended warranties, there several schools of thought, but depending on how long you want to keep the bike, a extended warranty is VERY CHEAP insurance. Unlike many automobile extended warranties, KMC's version is fairly comprehensive in what is covered and has no mileage limitations. As far as the dealer is concerned, they are a "win/win" deal for them. They make a few bucks on the front end (KMC does actually charge the dealer for the extended warranty) and they get to charge "book" rates on any service work to KMC.
I'll give you a couple of examples of how my extended warranties have already paid for themselves. In some cases, many times over.
I had a '97 ZX-7R. In '98, the small reflector in front of the headlight bulb broke off in the housing. The stem of this reflector was attached to the back of the housing with one small screw. There was only one problem. You can not get just one of those reflectors. You have to buy the whole housing assembly at $490 (back then). I went through two of them.
Also that year, my OEM fan blade had melted, even though I was still running the stock exhaust. I wanted to get a new blade, but again, I could not (didn't know about the Muzzy aluminium fan). KMC did not sell the fan as a single part. Instead, I would have had to get the complete assembly (including the bracket) for $290.
While waiting for my '00 12R to arrive, my 7R would not stay in 5th gear. The mechanic, concerned about the amount of mileage I had on the bike (63K at that time), said he would not replace just one or two parts in the transmission, only to have to go back into it for some other failure. Either caused by the new parts or something unrelated. He replaced everything from the input to the output shafts. The cost of this little venture was around $1800.
All of the above and many other "little things" were all covered by the warranty. None of it cost me a dime.
As for my 12R, I have made two warranty claims. The first one was several months ago (long after my standard warranty had expired), when the plug between my generator and regulator got fried. The parts alone were close to $500. The second one was when the compression screw on the bottom of one of my fork tubes would not turn. I ended up stripping out the very soft flat head screw top while attempting to get it to turn. Just like everything else, you had to get the complete lower fork tube. There's another couple hundred bucks.
So, in both cases, I have got more then my money's worth out of my extended warranties. If you don't plan on keeping your bike from much more than a year or if you put less then 6K miles a year on your bike, you'll have to decide for yourself. In my case, I'll do that many miles in about 4 months. For me, there is no choice to make. I got to have one. The nice part is that any remaining time is transferable when you sell the bike. .
