The Quest
The Quest is to ride from the NW tip of the contiguous US to Laguna Seca, keeping as close as possible to the Pacific Ocean and staying on paved or semi-paved roads.
I'll be starting out this Saturday, July 5, and will work my way down. Hopefully, will be able to get a few pictures along the way, but I'm not going to try and make a video log of the journey. What was interesting in planning the trip was figuring out how to get to the NW tip, and then head south! Lots of 'local roads' to follow!

2 years ago several of us took the coast route to Laguna Seca. We stayed by the water most of the time. However we did veer east through the Redwoods, but headed west to Fort Bragg on the wildest, curviest, steepest road I've seen yet. We had a terrific time. Watch out for cows on the road down around Sonoma. You'll love it. I wish I could go, but work rules.

..dude, we might see each other on the coast?...ddpete and I are leaving mid-morn on the 5th or pre-dawn on the 6th..we wanna stay on the coast to avoid the I-5 HEAT...we're planning on hooking up with Dino, Ozzy, fish, and PK in Eureka or Fortuna...or Weaverville?...look for two massive outlines in black leathers on green 12Rs with camping gear strapped on the back...

Heh, I decided to head out today, instead of waiting till tomorrow morning. Left the house at 3 this afternoon, was through Neah Bay and up FIVE MILES of gravel road to get to Cape Flattery. WA 112 is a great road from Port Angeles all the way to Clallam Bay. Not too twisty, not a lot of traffic. Backtracking to WA 113, I was really suprised at the quality and lack of traffic on this road as well. Not too long of a road, and then it joined back up with US101. Rolled south on 101 (In the course of the day, I've got north, west, east and south on the same highway!) and pulled into Forks for the night. The whole town shut down for the fireworks celebration, and my $50 a night room had a balcony where I sat out and watched the show over the waterfront. Not a bad first day!

Was a GOOD day for ridin! I headed south on 101 from Forks, and talked to some folks who had come north through Oregon on 101. Yep, fucking octegenarians in their 50 foot RVs have the whole coast tied up in gridlock.  And yes, it was raining. With that in mind, I headed east on 12 outta Aberdeen and hooked a right onto I5. Whee...Highway drone... Ah well, it DID get me through Oregon quickly. That in itself is a blessing. Oregon has the biggest collection of silver haired left lane bandits I know. They were prolly lost, looking for their Gin Rummy partners who were over on the coastline in their RV. Jumped off of I5 at Grants Pass and headed down 99 to 199, which is the Redwood Highway. The light was pretty crappy, so didn't get very many good shots of the bike in the trees. But was a NICE ride. Traffic was pretty light, and when I got to Crescent City, there were rooms available at every Inn. Sadly, no places available for $50. But I did end up staying at the same place I did two years ago. The fartherest I've gotten past this point on a motorcycle is right where the forest starts at the edge of town. I'll let Zhooligan fill everyone in on why we didn't make it any farther on the bikes that trip. So tomorrow will be all new roads for me (yay!) and I hope to make it down to the Bay area by Monday. Anyone want to meet up for lunch or something?

Heh, only saw one buck, and he was off to the side. A blast from the air horns sent him scurrying! Went down 101 to Laytonville, caught Branscomb road over to CA 1. Wow! Double wow! Fucking triple wow with goddamned chopped nuts and a cherry on top! That's a twisty humpy squirming ballbuster of a road! Loved it! Like sex with a acrobatic nymphomaniac! Got on 1, was NOT disappointed. Soldier Point was the first good look out over the coast. Headed south, and didn't start running into the droves of RVs until I got to Fort Bragg. Caught 20 back over to Willits, then back down 101 for a bit to Santa Rosa. Caught 12 going east from there. One thing for certain, Sonoma has the most aggravating set of traffic lights in the world! Sheesh! And the whole fucking town seems to be laid out along the highway! Got through it ok, then caught 29 heading sorta south, sorta east. Was really NOT wanting to get caught in SF traffic, in case you were wondering why all the back roads. Worked out pretty good, kept going, got over to 680. Visiting friends up in Manteca, so was able to go reverse flow on 680 over to 580, just sailed right along. Was tempted to take Old Altamont Pass road, but was getting tired by that time and decided to just stay on 580. Branscomb road seemed to have loosed up the head bearings a bit, so I'm going to hunt down a shop today and see if they can take a look at them. The bike has a distinct feeling now when you brake, and then let off, that you can feel in the handlebars, sorta a muted 'clunk'. Other than that, the big Zed sled has performed well. Got bored one one long straight stretch of 101 in southern WA, saw over 160 on the speedo. Checked the GPS, max speed reading of 162. Funny that the old analog speedo seems to be more accurate! I'm gonna be kicking it today, and will be checking the board from time to time. EBD, if you want to do lunch or something, give me a shout here!

Sounds like the road we discovered 2 years ago. BTW, this was the road where I finally "became one w/my 12." I laid on her back, and said sock it to me baby, or something like that She took all I could handle, and didn't even complain about scratching her sides The other funny part is that my brother on his 929 and my friend on his R1 had their brakes heat up and fade on them, while my 12s brakes never gave a hint of over heating, go figure....

You know, I never had the brakes on my 12 fade, even with the stock pads and rotors. Now the rear shock, that's another matter. In the tight and bumpy stuff around Mount Saint Helen's, it would roll over and die on me halfway up to the top.

damnit, i wish i could remember some of the really good roads we hit between the coast and the 101. i think 20 and 116 were a couple of em i believe. stewarts point- skagg spring road was just an incredible find, tho i'v read that it became super popular since then so the cops clamped down on it. unfortuantely i cant remember the route numbers for sure, so u'd best check with some cali riders or do a search. here's one writeup http://www.ratrun.com/fantastic_roads.htm that tells u more about the stewart's point road.
