Some MotoGP news
For the unwashed masses.
Ducati victory justifies the hype
It was twenty seven years since an Italian rider had taken victory on an Italian motorcycle in the premier class of Grand Prix racing when, on the 29th August 1976, Giacomo Agostini took victory at the Nurburgring riding the legendary MV Agusta. It was five years earlier that Bruno Spaggiari had scored Ducati´s last podium in the World Championship, taking third place at Imola riding the Ducati 500. After three decades of exile from the series, Loris Capirossi rubber stamped Ducati´s return in fine style yesterday, confirming all the hype surrounding the Italian factory since their arrival on the MotoGP scene.
Their Grand Prix adventure started in impressive style, with a podium for Capirossi at the first race of 2003 in Japan, the top two slots on the grid at Jerez and another podium - this time for Troy Bayliss. Second place by Capirossi at Mugello was a clear indication of the surprisingly swift evolution of the Desmosedici, and after just six races that has been confirmed with an epic win.
McWilliams and Pitt give their versions of the first lap melee at Catalunya
Jeremy McWilliams and Andrew Pitt have both given their versions of the first lap chaos which saw both riders crash into the gravel along with Akira Yanagawa on the first lap of yesterday´s race at the Circuit de Catalunya. The crash happened when Pitt attempted an inside pass on McWilliams but collided into the British rider, who in turn smashed into the Japanese wildcard as they all tumbled into the dirt. Yanagawa came off worst, suffering from concussion and suspected broken ribs, and McWilliams was left fuming about the incident, laying the blame squarely on the shoulders of the Australian.
'What was that all about?´ asked McWilliams, who was starting his 150th Grand Prix. 'The race is 45 minutes long, and I got hit before we´d even finished the first lap. I asked Pitt afterwards if he thought he was going to win the race in the first lap from the back row of the grid - but to be honest my main concern was for his team-mate, who didn´t look too well. If I´d have qualified 14th or 15th it probably wouldn´t have happened, but you tend to get the more dangerous riders at the back of the grid. I´m okay, but really disappointed.
