ELECTRICAL problem 2000 ZX12R Ninja
2000 ZX12R
Hello All, HELP PLEASE!!!!
The other day I got on my bike, pulled up the kick stand, pulled in the clutch (bike was in 1st), pushed the starter switch and NOTHING!
I then put the bike into neutral and still nothing.
Double check...key is on...power is on...kick stand up...and the bike is in neutral. Press starter and NOTHING!
I then reached down and wiggled the shifter, as I wiggled it I heard a click (looked up and bike was still in neutral. I pressed the starter again and the bike started right up!!!
THIS IS HOW I AM CURRENTLY STARTING MY BIKE!!!
I have service manual for bike and am some what mechanical inclined.
Has any one had or repaired this problem?????
I am thinking some sort of switch, maybe neutral safety switch??????????????????

I had this or similar problem and it was the switch behind the clutch lever on handlebar... I took it off pulled it apart and cleaned it and it works great... Only way bike would start was nuetral... When I pulled the clutch in it wouldn't... That was the fix for me... Or also may be the kickstand switch.... But I bet on the clutch lever switch...

ELECTRICAL problem 2000 ZX12R Ninja
ZX12richard.............No luck!
Cleaned up the clutch switch inside and out.
Am noticing that that the bike will only start in neutral but ONLY WHEN I am NOT pressing the cluch lever.
As well after starting the bike I put it into 1st gear, still tightly holding the clutch lever that if I put the kick stand down it stalls immediately OR if the kick stand is down when I put it into 1st (still tightly holding the clutch lever) it stalls immediately!!
Did you experience any of these symtoms as well????
Need some help guys?????

QUOTE Am noticing that that the bike will only start in neutral but ONLY WHEN I am NOT pressing the cluch lever.
This is the exact symptom mine did when my switch behind the clutch was dirty... Only started with clutch lever out and in neutral....
You clean all the contact points inside and out of the switch... This is what my trouble was with those exact symptoms..

Another component that needs to be eliminated. We all survived fine without the damn switch for years. If you have to have a switch to remind you to pull in the clutch before starting the bike in gear you should not be riding. And if you need a switch to remind you to put the kickstand up you shouldn't be riding.
The proble with these things are they don't always break when your at home next to the tool box. Freddy Krugers chases you and the bike won't start cause the clutch interlock switch has dirt on it! Your in Red Bluff California in August!

I just ordered the clutch switch from ronayers.com
Mine had done this several times, but this last time I could not get it to work again.
The switch is only $10.99, they have them in stock.
