Got ya,
Anyway, the May 30 issue of National Dragster, the NHRA paper, has a neat article about Top Fuel and Funnycar HP. Previous estimates based on acceleration vs. weight calculations had led people to speculate Hp in the 6000 range. Seems it's much higher than that. They installed torque sensors on the output shaft of Doug Kalitta's car, essentially making the car it's own dyno. Here're some numbers - 2.6 seconds into the run at about 270 mph (at half track) peak torque of 6,205 lb/ft is reached. Peak Power is also right about 1/2 track at 7,933 hp. Max rpm is about 8000. That's about 1000 hp per cylinder- more hp out of one cylinder than an entire F-1 or CART engine.
Here's somthing extra I figured out. The engine only turns over about 600 times under full throttle in a run of 4.5 sec. How's that for part longevity!

I cannot imagine what it'd feel like to pilot one of those monsters down the 1320. That's an insane amount of power to try and hook up. The guys (and gals) that drive those cars have definitely got my respect.

They may only go in a straight line for a few seconds but the technology is unreal. Their skills unbelievable and wow what power! Thanks for the info Doug.
Can you imagine if they had different tire technology? Besides crushing the driver with G's, peeling the strip up into a pile of rubble, they would be running sub 2 second quarters!

ive always wondered what will be the next big thing to improve traction.
Perhaps treaded type vehicles similar to snowmobiles or something.

Actually sounds...VERY AWSOME in person  SMELLS goood too!!!
Did the article say how many HP it takes just to spin the blower???
YEARS ago...I heard it was 300+hp!?!?!?

8000 revs per minute / 60 sec =133 revs per sec x 4.5 sec. =599.99 revs
It's actually less than that because the engine averages less than 8000 over the run.

Man I wish the Rice burner racers could see this. Most of those guys are into Hp per Liter or cylinder. This is what I call a post! Long live the Big Block!

Ya...wasn't debating the # of revs...it just sounds so strange to here it that way
Last time a TF-car was at Gville for a week of testing and they were still parked there for a Friday T&T track night...I took video of the "used-up" parts they had LAYING ON THE GROUND...UNREAL to see that Billet Block...cranks, cams, LOTS of clutch-es...just laying there...only thing not laying around was the heads...I guess they don't "KILL" too many of those 
The REALLY FUNNY thing was...as I was panning the camera...a crew member came into view...had a clear hose in the fuel tank...other end in his mouth...I panned him out of view...BIG mistake...  because as I panned back...he was wipping his mouth and spitting out fuel LOLOLOLOL!!!
MAN...I wish I had the actual...taste-test...on video
Probly could have sold it to the crew so they could "remind him of what he did" LOL

You recognize the power when your at a race and watch a AA Fueler launch and break on the launch pad and coast through the lights with a 7.something et.
Walking in the pits and they fire one up and they gag the throttle and the hair on everyones heads within a hundred yards goes spasdic. If anyone here has not been to a NHA National meet, do yourself a favor and go. Even if you are blind you will be able to hear (even with ear plugs) and feel the incredible horsepower. There is nothing that compares to a AA Fueler launch and run. The only thing better is to see it at night.

what kinda dBs those things put out? i know in mission from cowboys house, which is still a couple miles or more from the track, when one of the big boys fires it up, u'd think it was just down the block!

When I go the Gatornationals, the kids insist on sitting right at the start line. I had a camera sitting on the bench seats, focused on the cars and triggered by a remote. BIG mistage. When they launched, they vibrated the camera right off the bleachers and into the beer can pile below.
I did get a good picture before that of the tarps that the crews hang off the side of their trailers and over the work area for sun/ rain protection. When they fired one up in the pits for testing, the tarp was hanging on for dear life, flapping like a leaf in a hurricane. Great shot!
