Yes, Thanks for getting the server back up frEEk. In my experience, money spent on fault tolerance, and redundancy save both time and money, & mitigate against downtime & loss of services. I can't tell you how many times I've been grateful for RAID, & redundant power supplies Atleast you had a good backup ?

You know, I offered Freek a raid storage system. But I think their power/space budget precluded installing it.

swft, yeah, we couldnt really afford it. we pay by rack space, & rack space aint cheap. we do actually run raid, but just plain mirroring, and IDE at that. hmm... raid

we didnt actually have a recent backup (bad admins, go to ur room ) but no data was lost. just a full partition that precluded anything from running. a quick database repair took care of the corruption.

You own the box and pay rack space ? Interesting.

I was holding one of these in my hands today, it would run this board quite nicely and only 1U.

Now I need to check and see if the automated backups on my board are still running.............

dave, the board is currently on a typical shared hosting box in teh same facility, hence the lesser qualit but better price. but we will be moving it to our own machine ("we" meaning maddog & myself) which is a dual p3 xeon machine quite similar to what u show there: 1U with cd,floppy & 2 hot swap drives on teh front, cept we're runnin poor ol 1133MHz chips on plain mirrored raid (i think). not even sure if its hardware or software raid. i _think_ its a promise raid card, which means it may as well be software. its a sweet little machine really. 1256M ram (slobber) which is the nicest point. in any case, we havent moved it to our machine yet cause its actually more $$ to do so, cause our costs are alot higher, but we all feel (i think) that better reliability is worth the price. the board isnt particularly resource intensive, so yeah, it will run quite easily on the machine. board would have to get ALOT bigger to justify a larger machine, like 50 times bigger or more.

Hey frEEK,

I've learned quite a bit about my hobby doing the board admin stuff since going to my own site in January. Although I don't see the traffic you do here I've got an understanding what it takes to run one and it's not much in disk or processing power. A fast reliable connection is your best friend on things like this.

I spend a lot of time in data centers with tens of millions of dollars of equipment we install and a lot of times to me this kind of stuff is more interesting.

Keep up the good work.

Dave

yeah, i enjoy goin to teh data center to visit the hardware every once in a while. half the 21st floor in Harbour Center, the provider is peer1. so yeah, we gots the good connection but there is TONS of $$ around us, like u said. Bravenet is in the cage right next to us. they got the nice racks & the neatly installed, colour-coded cables & around 100 matching 1U units with some sweet internals. even brought in a phone line for anyone workin in the cage, & an lcd monitor w desk & chair & a cabinet for storage. pretty dern nice. wouldnt mind having that kinda setup myself! i'd have to say i find the hardware & net/sysadmin stuff more interesting than the coding part, but i guess its just a case of "the grass is greener".
