is my chain stretched?

chain has a tendency to make a sound like its hitting the sprocket cover. happens when the chain gets dry (real bad then). lube er up & it goes away. but now it starts doing it, albeit faintly, within 100kms of lubing. maybe the chain has a couple tight links? do i need to replace it?

if so and i decide to go to a 520 chain, i gotta replace both sprockets too right?

thx!

yeah, it was adjusted. hence the correct amount of slack. i assumed it was loose of course, but its fine. thats not jsut my opinion mind u, cause i dont pretend to know shit about how tight a chain to be. this is fomr a coupel other riders & a dealer. so i can only guess the chain has some tight links or is otherwise fucked.

lol! i'll try to get there next week sometime. still need to get my old parts from pemberton & shit. dmanit, nothing ever works out right for me! which days work best for u?
as for lubin it, that used to be fine, but now it starts real faint ver shortly after lubing, so it's progressed past the point where i can just keep it lubed & ferget it.

Change it if it makes you feel better.

We all know that if it makes you feel good, you should do it.

Freek,

Check the sprocket teeth. Kinda sounds like they are worn down to nubs.

thx swft, i'll do that. i'd much rather spend on a sprocket than put out the big $$ for a chain.

You will prolly need both. Chains and sprockets are consumable.

If you change just the rear or both sprockets, it's still recommended that you replace the chain at the same time. Sorry for the "bad news", frEEk, but that's usually been the "rule".

Yep. If you change chains you should change sprokets, too.

Do a little dance with your monkey in your black turtle neck.

(Anyone? That's an allusion to Sprokets by Mike Myers on Saturday Night Live).

OK look. Spend money on a good chain (cheaper ones stretch easier is the rule of thumb) and replace sprockets at the same time with steel ones. But realisticly (sp?) probably the abuse level of your bike is kinda high!?!
