http://eastnc.craigslist.org/mcy/3906004194.html
could you swap a 2004 zx12r motor into a 2001 zx12r chassis i know alot of wiring would need to be changed out but could it be done?
if so what all would be needed to make it work?

I wouldn't pay $2k for one that needs a motor. I've seen them complete and descent shape for just a tad more then that.
But the big question... why even dick with a 10r motor?

The fron engine mounts are different. You have to drill and tap the the "old" mount points to the '04 engine top end. And there are differencies in the electrics as you said: crank sensor, cam-sensor position for starters.

ECU, Throttle bodies, Stator, 2 fans on the rad, are all different as well if you are wanting to do a complete swap out to newer technology. It can all be done if you want to do it. I switched out all the electronics and associated hard parts on my 01 with 04/05 parts to get the 32 bit ECU and a couple more parts I think makes a better package for my bikes intended purpose. If WOF in a straight line is all someone uses their 12R for the trouble to swap it all out wouldn't be worth the pain in the ass.

I'd stick with 00/01. 00 motor in an 01 bike you'd need the ECU...not sure what else don't think anything else.
Probably not worth the headache or add'l costs.

He could swap the cylinder head out and it will bolt strait in but if my memory serves me right and it always does KZScott swapped a late model motor into an early frame but simply drilling out the unfinished mount bosses on the front of the head next to the exhaust port and tapping it for the early model mounts.. Swapping the early motor to the late frame is a LOT more difficult. However like my previous post indicated and along with others indicating as well it's not just a simple swap. There's a lot of parts between the two model years that aren't the same and will require swapping.. The cost may be too much to consider doing the swap..

you just need to reindex the cam rotor to suit the ecu if you have an 00 going in an 01 or vice versa. the 00 is the oddball here 01+ use the same cam indexing. its as simple as grinding the little bump off and putting it where it needs to go. i ran 00 cams in my 01.. when it had the factory ecu.
yes i have used an 02 head in my 01 frame by simply drilling and tapping the head. look at it, you will know where.

sorry to kick an old thread, but does anyone happen to know whether the A model fairing will still fit around a B model engine?
