Weird zx12r starting issue
Have just bought the bike about a month ago. 2000 A1 model.
There has been a weird problem on a few occasions now. I'll go to start bike, clocks do there thing, I hit start button and not a thing.
If I move her into gear and back to neutral and flick the side stand down and up, she'll fire up no probs?????
Have I a dirty sensor either do do with gear positioning or side stand? Although if it was side stand, she should start anyhow with clutch engaged?
This has only happened 3-4 times now.
Also, do these have the same rattle a la Honda on the clutch baskets? Clutch engaged, rattle goes away.
Cheers for any help.

First: welcome to the forum and congrats on a new ride! I know the symptons you are describing. Is it happening when on neutral? If it does not start with the clutch engaged (whether in neutral or in gear) it's most probably the clutch switch (they're prone to go bad). Does the DFI light go on momentary when the ignition is switched on when this happens? If not it could also be the ignition switch it self. There can be bad connection because of build-up and it prevents the one wire that is connected trough resistor to the ECU and then it will not start. You can maybe still fix it by cleaning the ignition switch with brake cleaner in every position and then give it good oiling with key or gun oil. If those don't help it can also be the gear position swith. It can be changed without removing the engine (like it says in service manual). Hope you get it sorted out and get the service manual anyway if you don't allready have one.

Thanks, love the bike!!
Yeah, I'd kinda leaned towards switch gear, but thought maybe it was a common fault easily known by zx12 owner. My old 929rr did this and it was dirty contacts, in switch, but it just packed in and wouldn't start at all until I cleaned them, this problem is weirdly random
There was quite alot of crud and chain lube emanating from under the sprocket cover, I was thinking maybe a dirty sensor in that general area, given that moving the gear out of neutral and back in again, and she starts?
Gave it a good clean with wd40 and degreaser and will prob take cover off tomorrow and clean inside it too.
Cheers, I'll look out for the lights on dash tomorrow also. Thanks for reply, appreciate it!

To clean the gear position sensor you have to disassemble the sensor itself. Cleaning dirt from the sprocket cover is just a start... Enjoy your bike!

Side stand safety switches have been known to cause this problem.
