Word: countermeasures You know, it's a funny world. Just when it looked like the police were getting the upper hand, what with the spread of laser speed detection, the major players in detectors bring out active jammers against laser. Here's my story:
First longish trip with the Z06. Had to be in Spokane saturday morning, so I left Seattle on friday afternoon. It's about a five hour drive normally, but traffic was moving along nicely, and as I headed east on I90, I watched this black M3 wind his way through traffic and past me. I let him go up on ahead until we got into the pass (Snoqualamie) and then I lowered the boom on him. We can fun trading the lead a few times back and forth. Finally got where there was a good clear spot to run in, and he decided to jump on it hard. I responded in kind, and he faded back like he had put it in reverse as I went through 140 up the pass. Slowed down and let him catch up, and we both waved, just happy to be able to have a little fun on the pass. Kept up a good pace through traffic, and pretty soon, had a mamba chain of about six cars going 100+ through light to medium traffic. Once over the pass, I knew I was going to have to stop for gas, forgot to fill up while in Seattle, so I worked my way over towards the right lane coming up on Ellensburg. I was within a quarter mile of the exit, when the Escort SR7/ZR3 lit up like a christmas tree, the display reading 'SHIFTING' as it wailed like three cats in a blender. I was right there at the exit, took it and watched as the M3 came off with me. We pulled around to the gas station, exchanged pleasantries, and then I let him know about us getting lasered. We got back on I90, and lo and behold, the rest of the mamba chain was there on the right side of the road, waiting for us! Unfortunately, they had WSP 'escorts' bracketing them, so I assumed their dance card was probably full for the rest of the evening. Moral of the story? Laser shifters do work. I was the lead car, yet they didn't go after me, yet picked off ever car behind me that continued on I90.

Okay, so I'm assuming here that "shifting' is when the laser detector shifts to "Jam" mode?
And what about the rest of the mamba line? Is that the cops? The traffic behind you? So when you got back on the road the cops were busy pulling over everyone else? Were they behind you guys since you all were keeping up such a good pace?
Oh, I would have LOOOOVED for you guys to go past me on the 12.
Assuming I was on the freeway.
Assuming I was in Washington.
Wait a minute...why the HELL would I be on the FREEWAY on my 12??? EEEWWWWWWW!!!!

*laughs* Exactly! Would have been a good day for taking the 12, but I wouldn't have enjoyed getting out of the customer's site at 3am and heading back. Brrr...Did that ONCE!

Actually, laser jammers DO work. Radar jammers (which are illegal in all 50 states) DO NOT work. Laser jammers are NOT illegal.
Here's the test results:
Escort Shifter ZR3 ($449.95 suggested retail)
Escort doesn't use the J word, choosing instead to diplomatically christen their jammer a "shifter". Terminology aside, we found it to be a tie with the BEL LaserPro 904 for user-friendly operation and ease of installation. Like the BEL, its twin front and single rear transceivers simply plug in to a junction box whose two wires attach to power and ground. The bulk of the installation time, as in the BEL and Blinder, is consumed by mounting the transceivers. Figure on a couple of hours for a proper job although it doesn't take a graduate engineer to get it done.
The Escort Shifter ZR3 uses the control/display module, sans a few features, from their high-end remote detectors and we found it to be the class of the field. Audio alert volume can quickly be adjusted using the simple thumbwheel control that also is used for power on/off chores. Better yet, the ZR3 can be linked to Escort's superb Passport 8500 detector using one thin cord with telephone-style connectors at each end. Once coupled together, the 8500's text display will spell out warnings of laser attacks and also tell you when it's doing its laser-shifting routine. Of the units tested, we found this to be by far the most elegant way of conveying information.
The ZR3 proved to be quite adept at confusing lasers, achieving a remarkable 99 percent efficiency rating against the five guns. In fact, had it not missed our 450-foot threshold by a scant two feet against the LTI Ultralyte LR gun, it would have scored a perfect 100 percent, the best jamming ability we've ever witnessed. If you want better protection against lasers, most likely you'll have to buy a judge.
