ZX-12R Touring Tank and Rack Modification

.

I had this idea quite a few years back, and finally got round to building it.

Ozzy made something similar but just the top rack. Nice to have a full rack to hang stuff of. Really digging the tank addition.

That extra tank is wonderfull idea. Also noticed that when I tuned my ECU to have good AFR my fuel consumption dropped from 7 l/100km to 6 l/100km (33.5 to 39 MPG). But that extra 7 liters would be very nice when blasting trough Europe... It would take quite alot of fabricating though... If there would be just bigger fuel tank, getting rid of the cover, that would net more capacity much easier...

Hi there tuusinii,

With my set up, forks lowered through the yoke/triple clamps 10mm, the rear cover is higher than the top of the front tank neck, so would not fill.

A lot of thought went into the build, and maybe an extra 1.5 litre may be achieved, if I removed my alarm and modified the rear of the subframe, with the ECU on top of the rear tank, instead of underneath, as at present.
A Mk 2 version will be built for 1 of my other 12's.

Thanx Dave.

I meant that that whole extra tank in the trunk is quite a lot of fabricating. I remember seing that in the early days of ZX12 someone fabricated aftermarket fuel tank that get rid of the tank cover and added about 3-4 litres more fuel, bringing it up to 24l full. If I could find one for reasonable price it would be much easier than extra tank like yours. It's nice idea though - and fabulous fabricating! What kind of pipe do you have, by the way? Can't see it from your pictures... Because with stock pipe the AFR was in the region of 11 when cruising at 120-140kph (75-90MPH). I have quite good map for the OEM ECU for the standard pipe and now I'm just building one for the Akrapovic pipe. There is also very stange igniniton timing on those RPM:s and other weird things like when you open you're throttle you get less fuel in the OEM ECU map...

Hi tuusinii

I'm using a full Akrapovic,
BMC filters,
6 degree static ignition advance,
TPS reset 1.16v,
Modded stub stacks,
Kleen air removal and vacuum,
PC usb 3, with TENN12'SDynojet Certified Tuner Akrapovic Map, not had it on a dyno myself, but this one rides the best out of the maps I have.

The 12 does run quite well, but there is room for improvement.

Thanx Dave.

tuusinii, just in case you never saw it years ago when it came out, there was a company that made a carbon fiber tank that did exactly what you describe. It skipped the cover and provided an extra gallon of capacity. Not sure if I would trust it though, since it would seem likely to fail and release all your fuel in an accident. Would need a good internal fuel bladder to compensate, and not sure how heavy those things are.

Freek: yes I remember seing it here many years ago. Or I remember seeing someone promoting for it but not sure if any was actually build in the end. But it would be what I'm looking if there still would be someone producing those...

Dave: never been in a Dynojet dyno tuning session but I'd think that it's quite hard to tune the fuel with Power Commander for the highway/motorway because the ECU is still mostly in the IAP-map mode and the AFR can be all over the place in just 1% of the throttle. Also there is still those weird ignition advance numbers in a couple of places. For example there is a ignition advande of about 40 degrees with small throttle openings. If you add that your 6 degrees of static advance your at about 50 degrees. And as I see that you have the A-model (like mine) the ECU uses the same ignition map for all gears.

Two years ago I made the map for standard pipe almost ready - it only needed some virtual acceleration pump map modifications to get it really perfect. This summer when I started to make the map for th Akra I really noticed the difference in 4-to-1 pipe compared to the stock 4-2-1 pipe because I had to remove like 30% of fuel in the 3000-4500RPM section. And needed to add fuel after 7000-8000 RPM... After working with the ECU map it made the bike much better and smoother and also now it's so that when you open more throttle you always get more fuel. But after this summer I probably have the Akra map for the ECU ready if someone want's it.

I know it did exist. Kerry (fulltilt) had one on his carbon 12r, though I recall he had issues with it leaking. Don't know if someone still makes them though.

Here;s one option that is still available, although expensive:

Looks like the more mouthwatering option was from Safetech, with a 6.5gallon CF tank. But not sure if one was ever produced, and Safetech is long gone it looks like.

tuusinii,

I would be interested in trying your Akra map.

Thanx Dave.
