IP Tunneling! So, my local cablemodem ISP's DNS is all screwed up...Can't get to bikeland, labusas, half the world (yahoo, etc...) out there. I gots this nifty piece of software from Cisco, that lets me set up an IP tunnel to work from home. Since work's network is down in Sunnyvale CA, their DNS ain't broke, and here I am! Sometimes, technology is a beautiful thing. ____________

Sometimes it ain't, I have spent the last week troubleshooting someone elses SSL code. Just compiling the tools was a nightmare. The worst part was I wrote my own SSL server and when I hooked up to it the supposedly bad client (ours, written by someone else) it talked perfectly. Come to find out the Server supplied to us (we needed to talk to it) was full of bugs and they wouldn't supply the source code.

I feel for ya, Ted. Fewking customer I'm working with right now has a whacked out WINS entry for their domain controller. Advertises as DC on one subnet, and not the other. So you can join the domain, if you are on the right subnet. ____________

Problem with that use of an IP tunnel is that all your traffic is routed across the network you're tunneled to and that's not an ideal setup. I guess it's better than being down and that sounds like your point.
Wouldn't it be easier to specify a know good DNS from your local system and avoid the PPTP overhead ?

You dont need cisco software to setup and connect to a VPN server...that technology comes free within Windows...has for years ____________
