Magazine Collection at Local Shop :)
While I was waiting the other day at Kevins shop (Stock mild to wild in Jax Florida)....I decided to wander over to the waiting section. They have a nice bigoll leather couch and a selection of magazines. This being a more "cruiser" oriented shop I picked up a copy of "Hot Rod Biker" or something like that.
Reading through it (painfully) I come across two very amusing articles.
Article 1:
This was from the "Ask a Mechanic" section. basically goes like this
Reader: My harley burns alotta oil...is this normal?
MagMech: "Its perfectly normal for a harley to use 1 quart of oil every 2000 miles or so"
wtf? if my bike lost a quart of oil in 2000 miles...id have a heart attack!
Article 2:
This was a "lets mod this bike with an absurd amount of money"
I think the bike was a "sportster" or something like that. Anywhoo it only made 43hp stock (this made me laugh out loud in the store)...and after 3 or 4 thousand dollars worth of work..which included a new pistons, heads, block, rods, carbs, etc etc (basically a whole new motor)....this beast now made 80hp.
Now I guess I can see the argument of (well we doubled the power output of the engine). Well yea..but its 80 fuckin horsepower!!!! I just dont get these guys sometimes

LOL - not that I'm a hawg guy, but at least that VROD thing is a step in the right direction. Also, the LAST thing I would want on a hawg is anything more than 80 HP - I mean, they are comfy as hell on long trips, but handeling/breaking - OH MY!!

It's like art. It's all in the eyes of the beholder.
One of our good customers for the dyno business is a custom Harley guy. Builds what are consider to be really high powered Harley engines. He is well thought of in the Harley comunity and his work is considered to be some of the very best.
Some of the bikes he has brought in for testing and tuning are drop dead gorgeous. The guys have 50 grand in them in engine work, custome dodads, chasis work etc. And when they lay a number down of a 100 to 105 SAE horsepower they are absolutely stoked. And they honestly beleieve that their 99 horsepower and 84 to 90 foot pounds of Harley horsepower and torque is more powerful then japanese horsepower and torque. It is as if they have Clydesdale (sp?) horses and Japanese bikes have shetland ponies.
I have asked about oil and they do apparently use some oil and 2,000 miles is quite acceptable. Most are proud to point out that their Harley doesn't drip or leak or least very much!
BUt what the heck they are on two wheels and having fun. As for brakes my comment is how good can they be when they chrome them?!

I raced a guy on a HD once. He seriously thought he was going to teach me a lession. He had a FLXRCDTYYM or something that was fairly heavily modified. I found out later weighed in about 720lbs and was pushing 97HP on a dyno. He was so confident as he went to get his keys to teach me a lesson I actually started to wonder...
Well, needless to say, my 127HP 400lb CBR900rr was a bit of a match for him. The first two times he hit it, I just sat in his blind spot watching him look to see if he was pulling on me or not. (heheh) The third time he hit it I passed him in second gear on one wheel.
He was pretty suprised and was sure to tell me he has beaten plenty of other crotch rockets.
I talked to another HD guy about my 12R turning 180hp and he told me that was right up there with stock Big Dogs... ummm hmmm... Uh.. yeah... riiight... nevermind, is that a new chrome headlight switch cover spring retainer clip?

One quart every 2000 miles was what was designed for the crankcase breather to squirt on the primary chain for lubrication.I've heard of harleys beating "crotch rockets"before but that was in the eighties.Riders were red lining and dumping their clutch and sit and spin while the harley took off.Big dogs are about 125-135hp tops I believe.I just crack up when they say they're not into speed yet bore and stroke, cams, carb, drag pipes, new heads, please!!!I like harleys as I own one,so I found it humerous when you said you raced one.Hey it's all in fun. What good is chrome?Probably as much good as 180hp most of the time,it's still your pride and joy.

They live in their own little world and actually believe that their bikes are fast or quick. Last year I ran into a couple of guys with custom bikes, it looked like a shit-load of money was tied up in them. When I got beside them they hit it and I wheelied by them. Then at the next light they hit it hard and I just wheelied away. When we got to the next light, they were genuinely surprised, they had no clue. They were really nice guys, but re-educated.

I laugh at them more now (NOT out loud when owners are around of coarse ) then I did before I worked here...it TRULY amazes me how some of these people (as Ted said) are SO out of touch with what a "real bike" is like when it comes to performance...
Ryan intalled a set of NICE Billet heads on a BigDog...I ran it on the dyno...120HP and 121Lbs...
THEN the owner spends Gawd Knows How Much on a "Preditor" carb (Carl's Speed Shop) that he "likes what it looks like" to get 118HP 120Lb...LOL...
I just shake my head when we start a Hardly that's been sitting on the ShowRoom floor for a while and it...PUKES OIL out of the crancase onto the floor...unfreekinreal...
I can't tell you how many times I've come out of the dyno room saying..."I will NEVER see what these people see in these bikes that VIBERATE SOOOOOO MUCH!!! for so little power" ...
I have run a few of them on the dyno that...honest to god...I can NOT STAND TO KEEP MY FEET ON THE FOOT PEGS while "reving them up" because they vibrate SO FREEKIN MUCH...makes my asshole itch some times!?!?!? NO SHIT!!!
I also laugh...and shake my head when I almost always find nuts and-or bolts on the dyno and floor after running the real shakers LOL.LOL.LOL.LOL...
With that said...the new FI "TwinCam" bikes actualy feel very throttle responsive and believe it or not...DON'T "shake" much at all (seat, floor boards and handle bars anyway)...
We do a resonably inexpensive (ha ha)...bore, CNC heads, pipes (TWO INTO ONE!!!), carb (or PC3 on FI bike) package that brings the TwinCam from a weak 61.3hp/76.6lb to totaly diff. running (duh)101.6hp/111.6lb...
NOT bad...fer a Hardly...it's actualy reliable also...not one has come back with any problems...
STILL WOULDN'T OWN ONE THOUGH
