A little help with a zx12
I got a lead on a 2000 green ZX12 with low miles ..
Well i got a look at the zx12 today and it is very clean ... Problem is i can't get the gas cap off to see the inside of the tank .. It didn't sound like it had any fuel in it and that bugs me ..It could be a total rust out in the tank .. Both tires are toast ..Brakes still seem to work .. Rotors are rust free .. The bike doesn't have mark on it and the seat looks great .. Both front turn signals are hanging by the wires , the back ones are fine .. It does look to have set for four years like he said .. The bike is covered with a ton of dust ... I could not see that milage because the battery is dead .. I got him down to 1800 cash ... I'm just unsure if i should get this bike even at that price ..
What do you guys think ?

Can always get a replacement tank and clean out the FI system worst case. No idea on the likelihood of the tank being rusted though. I would think relatively safe though with the coating in place. Were you able to get the rad cap off to look in there? I'd be more concerned about rust in the cooling system and engine. though frankly if no rust anywhere else on the bike, seems it would be in a pretty good dry storage.

Didn't pull the rad cap but did look at the coolant tank and it was green and clear of any rust ..Also i saw that the corner of the valve cover gasket was leaking ..Most likely because it was setting on the side stand for four years ..

Flush every system that bike has.You might get lucky.Any tank that sat with fuel for 4 years is fucked.Fuel pump is inside as you know so it`s fucked also. You can find replacements on e-bay.Even if you put 1000 bucks into it it would be a great deal after you buy.I have 57000 miles on my 2000 I bought new and it still runs 9.6 and use`s no oil.Engine is original with basic bolt on`s.If you run it hard get a billet basket .After having all your 14`s you will always hate the zx12r clutch feel. Cam sensor o ring, valve cover o ring always need replacing on 12r`s. Stator connector under rear seat always bad.Buy a ricks mosfet rec/reg and that fixed that when u buy a new battery. You might end up rebuilding calipers.

Thanks guys ... I think what i will do is low ball him again at 1500 .. He has no job and no money and nobody is going to buy the bike unless they are a kawi bike junky like me .. Even if he doesn't take right now he may call back in a few days ... I like the bike , i just don't want to be in it that deep in case i need to sell it ..

looking back, that could be a very good sign. if the thing was properly drained before storage then there won't be any sludge in the fuel system and it may be good as new.
instead of taking advantage of the poor shmuck, how about making the deal dependant on the fuel system condition? If the fuel system was drained and it is all clear and rust free, give him 2g. if it is gonna need a new tank and the fuel lines cleared, do the 1500.

He told me it was full when parked ... it's empty now ? It is kind of like a cop pulling drunk over and asking how many beers you had ... they always say 1 ...

that much fuel leaked out or evaporated? even if it sat there for several years, that seems odd.

That much fuel would not evaporate. If it really has sat that long You may be looking to change all the fuel components. But trough ebay they won't cost You very much if needed. First thing I would do is to drain the old fuel out and but fresh in and hope for the best. Did You check the fuel level by stick? On ZX12 where the tank is quite low and uder the seat it may be hard to hear...

Oops... What is the reason You can't open it? You don't have a key? Or was it just stuck? WD40 should help with that...

Does the key turn all the way? If it does, then the lock tabs are retracting. The key goes beyond 90deg- to about 4 o'clock when fully turned. If you can do that, I'd take off the black trim plate and just pry the front edge of the cap with a big flat wide screwdriver. There's not much you could hurt doing that. I' guessing the rubber gasket is stuck in the opening and/or the outside edge of the cap is corroded to the tank. The cap is aluminum, the tank steel and the corrosion between those too can get pretty ugly. If the key doesn't turn get a locksmith.
In any case Id say Buy It. I sure would. A used tank would be pretty cheap.

Id buy it easily, a lot of parts for that bike are available! And just about every 12 I've seen had that annoying gasket leak lol

Doug the key only turns to 2 oclock and stops .. I don't want to pust it anymore because the key might bust off ..
